Kentucky Derby 2020 Post Positions: Draw Start Time, Live-Stream Info and More

Jake RillSep 1, 2020

It's Kentucky Derby week, and the anticipation continues to build for the annual Run for the Roses. In an unorthodox year, the race is taking place four months later than usual, after it was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. But there are storylines aplenty heading into Saturday's event at Churchill Downs.

Typically, the Derby decides which horse will have a chance to complete the Triple Crown as the first of the three races to take place. Not this year, though, as Tiz the Law was victorious at the Belmont Stakes in June and will now look to follow that up with wins on Saturday and at the Preakness Stakes (Oct. 3).

There's still some business to take care of before the horses head to their posts at Churchill Downs. Post positions still need to be determined, and the draw to decide that takes place late Tuesday morning.

Here's everything you need to know for the post draw, followed by a breakdown of this year's top Derby contenders.

Tiz the Law

After racing to victory at the Belmont, Tiz the Law will look to become the 14th horse to capture the Triple Crown. Justify was the last to achieve the feat, in 2018, but no horse has won it by notching victories in the order of the Belmont, Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

Since the start of his career, Tiz the Law has been nearly unbeatable, winning six times in seven races. He's 4-0 in 2020, most recently claiming a win at the Travers Stakes on Aug. 8. Before the Belmont, he also won the Holy Bull Stakes and the Florida Derby.

However, the colt's lone loss came last November at Churchill Downs, when he finished third in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. But that race had sloppy conditions, and he has also improved while gaining more experience throughout the year.

Could that previous third-place finish be a sign of things to come? It's possible, as there are some other strong competitors in the Derby field. But Tiz the Law is going to be the favorite heading into the race, and the strong odds suggest he'll move one win closer to the Triple Crown on Saturday.

Honor A. P.

Although Honor A. P. isn't the most experienced horse in the Kentucky Derby field, he'll have the most experienced jockey. That's because Mike Smith is riding him for his 26th Run for the Roses appearance as he looks to become the oldest jockey to win the race.

The 55-year-old is a two-time winner of the Derby, after riding Giacomo to victory in 2005 and then winning the Triple Crown with Justify in 2018. Preparing to ride Honor A. P., he has paired back up with trainer John Shirreffs, who was Giacomo's trainer. And this experienced team knows it takes more than just skill to win at the Derby.

"We're good to go. Now we just need a bit of luck. You need some of that in that race," Shirreffs said, according to John Cherwa of the Los Angeles Times.

Honor A. P. has participated in five career races, finishing first or second in each of them. He has two victories, including a win at the Santa Anita Derby on June 6, and most recently finished second at the Shared Belief Stakes on Aug. 1.
