Spartans Are Bowl Eligible After a Big Win in West Lafayette

Brett Swenson and Keshawn Martin were the "keys" to a season saving shootout win vs. the Purdue Boilmakers on Saturday.

Michigan State came into Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette on Senior Day, with the intentions of becoming bowl eligible for their third straight year.

Brett Swenson tied a career long field goal twice, by nailing two 52 yard attempts, going 4/4 on the day.

The special teams play of Keshawn Martin have been exceptional all year long, he's showcased his speed in just about every game this year. It seems that number 82 is ready to answer the call every time Don Treadwell dials up a play for him. 

Martin's big play talent was going to have to be the ace in the hole for Sparty if they hoped to get past a prolific Purdue offense.

Martin's 45 yard burst in the fourth quarter set up the game tying field goal, knotting the contest at 37 all. 

Perhaps one of the most electrifying players in the Big Ten, Keyshawn Martin had a field day with special teams and trick plays, which greatly contributed to a thrilling late game win in West Lafayette.

Saturday's match up with the "Spoiler-makers" was without a question a must win situation, as bowl eligibility was on the line for Mark Dantonio's Spartans.

The Boilermakers' offense has had a reputation of racking up points quickly, which caused Michigan State to have to strike back repeatedly in order to stay up to par with Josh Elliott and company.

Don Treadwell and Pat Narduzzi had their hands full when it came to coming up with ways to stop Purdue, and on the other side of the coin, how to hit them back.

Josh Elliott had an absolutely monstrous day against the Spartan defense, passing for well over 300 yards, compiling 373 yards and two touchdown tosses, no picks.

Elliott's stellar performance was not enough to keep the Spartans down, as MSU rallied  in the fourth quarter, scoring 17 points, keeping their post season hopes alive.

Michigan State's Kirk Cousins tallied three touchdowns, and 208 yards to help carry the Spartans, but it was the efforts of Brett Swenson and Keyshawn Martin that made all the difference.

Both Swenson and Martin were named "Players Of The Game", a well deserved reward for their strong showings at Ross-Ade Stadium.

Michigan State's final game of the regular season will pit them against Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions, as they will fight for the Land Grant Trophy.

There is no doubt that Mark Dantonio and his team will be eagerly awaiting their bowl invitations. We will soon be informed of the who,what, and where in the weeks to come.
