Bite Your Tongue For Even Thinking About Firing Bob Stoops?

Wayne BassNov 12, 2009

I recently read an article stating that its time for Bob Stoops to submit his letter of resignation at OU. Are you kidding me?  Let me tell you about some of Oklahoma's great coaches of the past.  The first one that I am going to talk about is Bud Wilkinson.  Bud won three National Championships in his 16 years as OU's Head Coach.  Bud had won 145 games and lost only 29.  Even with that said he still had the occasional losing seasons. One of his seasons he went 2 and 5 in the regular season.  He has also won 14 Conference Championships.  Next on the list is Coach Barry Switzer.  Coach Switzer took the Sooners to 3 National Championships as well during his stint in Oklahoma.  Barry won 157 games and lost 29, he won 8 bowl games and lost 13 in the time that he was Head Coach at OU.  This means sports fans that even Barry Switzer lost the occasional bowl game.

Before I get to the Bob Stoops era just let me just tell you a little bit about what life in Oklahoma was like after Barry Switzer left and up until Bob came in.  After the 1989 season when Switzer left Oklahoma the Sooners won 61 games and lost 50.

In Bob's first season as Head coach the Sooners went 7 and 5.  That was the best season since Gary Gibbs 1990 Sooners who went 8-3.  His second year is well noted that they went undefeated winning the National Championship.  (something that not only most coaches but football programs never obtain)  In that same year Brent Musburger said that " The Sooners October run of burying Texas, Kansas State and Nebraska is one of the greatest 30-day stretches in college football history." Bob Stoops has racked up 109 wins vs his 23 losses.  He has only lost twice at home. He has won 6 conference championships and compared to the previous decade I think that 109-23 looks a lot better then 61-50.  He has help set records such as being the first team to win back to back to back Big 12 conference championships, he is the 4th Oklahoma coach to win over 100 games.  No other college has had more then three coaches win over 100 games.  Last year they set a single season record for most points (it was like 700 for the year) and he went like 5 games in a row winning by 60 points or more.  Bob has produced 2 Heisman Trophy Winners, as well as numerous other awards.

Don't forget that because of the Rhett Bomar the Sooners are currently on probation with the NCAA (even though Bob Stoops did exactly what he was supposed to do when he found out.) This limits the amount of recruits the Sooners are currently allowed... And, don't forget that this season has been plagued with injuries.  Such as Jermaine Gresham, Sam Bradford, Brodie Eldridge, Austin English, and two Offensive Linemen are also out for the season.  And, in closing if you add up all the points the Sooners have lost by this year its a grand total only 12 and 7 of those points came from Nebraska.  Getting rid of Bob Stoops would be the dumbest move in Oklahoma history!  Honestly, who is going to replace him?  You?
