Barcelona have been dealt a major blow after confirming Luis Suarez will miss around four months through injury.

Per a statement on the Blaugrana's official website, the striker underwent surgery on his right knee on Sunday and is set to be sidelined until May.

Other than Lionel Messi, no other Barca player has made a bigger contribution than Suarez in front of goal in 2019-20.

The former Liverpool star has scored 11 times and provided seven assists in 17 La Liga appearances this term and returned three goals and two assists in the UEFA Champions League.

The 32-year-old is also one of Barcelona's more experienced campaigners, and he will be sorely missed in what looks set to be a tight title battle with Real Madrid:

His absence will provide summer signing Antoine Griezmann with an opportunity to prove he is worth the £107 million Barca paid to bag him from Atletico Madrid:

The Frenchman's debut season at the Camp Nou has not been a disaster—he has netted seven goals in 18 league appearances. But it could have gone better.

With Suarez on the sidelines, Griezmann is likely to be played more regularly in the No. 9 role, where he should have more opportunities to find the net.

Barca also have decent attacking cover in the shape of Ansu Fati and Carles Perez, while Ousmane Dembele should be returning from injury in the near future.

Suarez's injury is not terminal to Barcelona's ambitions in La Liga, the Champions League or the Copa del Rey.

As long as Messi remains fit, they will have a chance of winning all three tournaments, particularly if Suarez can provide a boost at the business end of the season when he returns to fitness.

But the Uruguayan is a big loss, and Barca cannot afford to lose any more key attacking personnel or they will be in big trouble.
