Generals' Offense Clicks As They Pluck The Mallards 6-2

Adam BiggersNov 8, 2009

The Flint Generals utilized their offensive firepower, as they de-feathered the Quad City Mallards at home Sunday night.

The fans at Perani got their money's worth, as the Generals lit the lamp early and often against the visting Quad City Mallards.

Jamie Schaafsma got the Generals revved up eight minutes into the first period, netting his 4th goal (Smolinski, Tuzzolino) of the young season.

Quad City's Terry Harrison struck back midway through the first, to knot the game up at one a piece.

Bryan Smolinski's power play goal, his first as a General, put the home towners on top, 2-1. (Howells,Schaafsma). Tyler Howells' assist to former Sparty Bryan Smolinski could be the beginnings of a "Green and White" connection for the G-Men.

Tyler Willis' and Jake Pence's feed to Nick Pernula resulted in another Generals goal, upping the lead to 2, as the General offense took control in the first frame, 3-1, never looking back.

The Generals' lack of offense has thwarted efforts to start the season off with a bang. The Generals currently own a 3-5 record because of this.

Their power play is ranked near the bottom of the league at a meager 12.90% effectiveness, just a few percentage points higher than the visiting Mallards 9.09%, which puts the "Ducks" in the basement in this category.

The Generals were able to find the back of the net two more times in the second period, putting them up 5-1.

Tyler Howells, of the Frozen Four Champion Michigan State Spartans (2007), claimed his first goal of the season, breaking an eight game goal-less streak. Tony Tuzzolino notched his second assist of the game, while Nick Pernula earned his first, as they helped feed the puck to Howells, lighting the lamp once again for Flint.

The Generals took their 5-1 lead into the third period, with designs of giving fans what they asked for, more goals.

Flint's calamitous shoot-out loss to Fort Wayne on Friday night, the lack of offense produced Saturday against the expansion Dayton Gems... both things of the past in the minds of fans, as they were wowed on Sunday by the 6 goal affair with the Mallards.

Mike Thomson's tape to taper to Jamie Schaafsma led to yet ANOTHER goal for the Generals, and left Jamie one shy of the hat-trick.

Schaafsma's two goals and J.F. Labbe's display of goal-tending were more more than enough to snap the Generals' losing streak.

J.F. stopped 34 of 36 shots faced, as he was dynamic between the pipes yet again. The Generals possess two very talented goaltenders, and with a little help from the offense, they could be dangerous.

Rob Nolan surrendered just one goal in Dayton, but couldn't get any help from his offense in a 1-0 loss on Saturday.

It's not necessarily a bad thing to experience some down time, it happens to the best of teams.

The Generals are hungry to establish their winning ways once again, something that they, and the fans, were accustomed to in the 1990's.

Penalty Killing and goaltending are the strengths of the resolute Perani Inhabitors. They just need to put some pucks in the back of the net.

Not that a 6-2 victory wasn't adequate for the fans, but come on, it wouldn't be a Generals game if there wasn't a little action.

Resident tough-guy, Tyler Willis, again dropped the gloves to show the Mallards' Obi Aduba a little love.

Wait, it gets better...

Not one fight, but two fights, simultaneously! Flint's Craig Cescon and Quad City's Jason Goulet mixed it up a bit, as goalie J.F. Labbe had the best seat in the house for the two ice-capades.

The Generals will look to avenge their loss at the hands of the Dayton Gems, Wenesday night at 7:30. Come show your support for your Flint Generals, see you at Perani Wednesday night.
