Fantasy Football Week 13 Waiver-Wire Must-Adds
We're done with bye weeks, and the fantasy football playoffs come into focus. The standings will affect your waiver-wire approach in these last few weeks of the regular season, particularly on streamer options versus postseason stashes.
Sometimes it makes sense to drop a season-long contributor who's going to face stiff competition to pick up a player with a higher ceiling, especially if you're trying to claw your way into the postseason.
Last week, two quarterbacks available in more than half of Yahoo leagues gave fantasy owners a significant boost while both Tom Brady and Carson Wentz scored fewer than 15 points.
Don't drop Brady or Wentz yet, but keep in mind both have injury-riddled wide receiver units, and the latter suffered a hand injury Sunday—consider benching them for a hot acquisition. If you need an immediate upgrade at the position to keep your playoff hopes alive, two quarterbacks could provide major boom potential in the next two to three weeks.
Let's take a look at eight must-add players for Week 13. They're all owned in fewer than 65 percent of Yahoo pools. Free-agent acquisition bids are based on $100 budgets in 12-team leagues.
QB Sam Darnold, New York Jets (39 Percent Owned)
1 of 8
Sam Darnold is one of the hottest quarterbacks in the league. He's hit his stride in November, throwing for 1,098 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. The USC product looks comfortable in the pocket and also recorded his second rushing touchdown in three weeks Sunday.
Coming off a 315-yard, two-touchdown throwing performance against the Oakland Raiders, Darnold will remain a top streamer for at least the next couple of weeks. He'll face the Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins, who ranked 24th and 20th, respectively, in passing yards allowed per game going into Week 12.
Gang Green have scored 34 points in three consecutive games, which indicates head coach Adam Gase's offensive system is starting to click with Darnold as the centerpiece.
If you're ready to bail on Wentz, who's banged up (hand), pick up Darnold.
Free-Agent Acquisition Budget (FAAB): $8
QB Ryan Tannehill, Tennessee Titans (26 Percent Owned)
2 of 8
For managers who would like to add a quarterback with a rushing component to his game, Ryan Tannehill is still available in more than 70 percent of Yahoo pools.
Tannehill threw and ran for a pair of touchdowns against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, propelling the Titans to a 42-20 victory. Since taking over the starting job, he's recorded 10 scores through the air and three on the ground with only two interceptions.
Overall, Tannehill has a high floor because he's efficient, completing 68 percent of his attempts in four out of five games, and he doesn't constantly turn the ball over.
His numbers won't pop off the screen every week, but he may rack up points in the next three weeks. The Titans will play against mediocre or below-average pass defenses in yards allowed per game, which include the Indianapolis Colts (14th), Oakland Raiders (28th) and Houston Texans (26th).
As a threat to move the ball with his legs and good matchups coming up, Tannehill would serve as a solid alternative for an underperforming starter like Tom Brady, who's thrown two touchdown passes in his last three outings.
FAAB Amount: $6
RB Jonathan Williams, Indianapolis Colts (62 Percent Owned)
3 of 8
In case you missed last week's call to action, here's another plea to pick up Jonathan Williams while he leads the Indianapolis Colts backfield.
The Colts stuck to their run-heavy game plan without tailback Marlon Mack for a full contest, rushing 39 times for 175 yards and two touchdowns Thursday. Williams accounted for 26 rush attempts, 104 yards and a score. Although Jordan Wilkins suited up, he didn't log a carry.
Aside from Nyheim Hines' nine rush attempts for 51 yards, Williams dominated the touches and continued to produce behind the Colts' solid run-blocking offensive line, which ranks 11th in adjusted line yards (4.42), per Football Outsiders.
Williams has logged back-to-back 100-plus-yard performances, and the Colts haven't released an official timetable for Mack's return from a fractured hand. If the former is somehow left on the waiver wire, do whatever you can to acquire him while he's handling the bulk of the rushing workload. He's averaging 5.4 yards per carry for the season.
In Week 13, Indianapolis will go against the Titans, who have allowed 100-plus rushing yards in three of their last four outings.
FAAB Amount: $12
RB Rashaad Penny, Seattle Seahawks (19 Percent Owned)
4 of 8
The Seattle Seahawks may shift the workload distribution among their running backs moving forward. Rashaad Penny led the team in rushing attempts against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, logging 14 carries for 129 yards and a score.
Meanwhile, starting running back Chris Carson finished with only eight carries for 26 yards, and he fumbled but recovered the ball early in the fourth quarter. A miscommunication with quarterback Russell Wilson on the next play resulted in an Eagles turnover.
When asked about Carson's ball-security issues, head coach Pete Carroll alluded to splitting the rushing attempts next week, per Adam Jude of the Seattle Times.
"Chris is a guy who is a big part of our team and we'll do everything we can (for him)," Carroll said. "... Competition is a beautiful thing and no reason not to get (Penny) back in there next week. We'll get those guys hammering away."
The Seahawks selected Penny in the first round of the 2018 draft, so it makes sense to run with the hot hand. The second-year tailback may have an opportunity to carve out a consistent role in the ground attack against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
FAAB Amount: $7
WR Will Fuller V, Houston Texans (63 Percent Owned)
5 of 8
In his first game back from a hamstring injury, Will Fuller V hauled in seven receptions for 140 yards against the Colts on Thursday, leading the Houston Texans in targets (11) and receptions.
He's more than just a decent add-on to the offense; the speedster provides another dimension to the aerial attack opposite DeAndre Hopkins, who's often doubled.
The Texans have two top-five pass defenses coming up in the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos, but Fuller's ability to rack up yards in chunks gives him boom potential. He logged receptions for 41 and 55 yards against the Colts.
Fuller is a WR2 or flex option looking ahead, and if you're expecting a run in the playoffs, he could explode against the Titans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Weeks 15 and 16. Those clubs rank 22nd and 31st in passing yards allowed per contest.
FAAB Amount: $8
WR Dede Westbrook, Jacksonville Jaguars (62 Percent Owned)
6 of 8
Since Nick Foles' return, Dede Westbrook doesn't have gaudy receiving numbers, but he's been targeted 15 times, logging 12 receptions for 101 yards. He went into Sunday's game against the Titans with an illness but still tied with Chris Conley for the most targets (nine) among the team's wideouts.
Furthermore, the Jaguars' aerial attack draws a favorable matchup against the Buccaneers' 31st-ranked pass defense. As a priority pass-catching option, Westbrook deserves a look for the WR3 or flex spot in Week 13.
FAAB Amount: $5
WR Randall Cobb, Dallas Cowboys (30 Percent Owned)
7 of 8
Over the last three weeks, Randall Cobb has come on strong, logging 14 receptions for 307 yards and two touchdowns as a steady contributor in the Dallas Cowboys' aerial attack.
With wideout Amari Cooper typically drawing the opposing team's top cornerback, quarterback Dak Prescott has been peppering Cobb and Michael Gallup with targets. Prescott leads the league in passing yards (3,433), and he's moving the ball enough to keep all three receivers fantasy-relevant.
Cobb can operate out of the slot or on the perimeter. He could take advantage of favorable one-on-one matchups if Cooper has a tough battle, as he will in Week 13 with Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre'Davious White likely shadowing him.
Cobb's production could fade at any time, but he's worth a look as a flex option thanks to his recent hot streak.
FAAB Amount: $5
TE Ryan Griffin, New York Jets (44 Percent Owned)
8 of 8
One is an accident and two is a trend, but an extension says a lot about an organization's view on a player.
The Jets signed Ryan Griffin to a three-year extension Saturday, and he's scored in consecutive games. With fellow tight end Chris Herndon on injured reserve with a rib injury, Griffin sits atop the depth chart with the faith of the front office behind him.
He walked into the end zone against the Raiders on a wide-open reception Sunday, and the 29-year-old has hauled in all eight of his targets for 122 yards since Week 11.
Since Sam Darnold has high potential against the Bengals' and Dolphins' below-average pass defenses, his top pass-catching tight end registers on the acquisition radar.
