Alabama's Greg McElroy Came Through Like a Champion With Win Over LSU
Quarterbacks don't dream of completing 19-of-34 pass attempts in a game during the offseason. Those dreams are reserved for some gaudy number like 34-of-35. Yet, I'm sure Greg McElroy isn't disappointed in those numbers, as the win he came up with today in the biggest game of the year so far for the Crimson Tide mattered the most.
274 yards of passing however sounds a little bit better, and two touchdown passes sort of put the icing on the cake.
After going so long without a touchdown pass, and with underwhelming performances in his last few games, many were beginning to doubt that Greg McElroy could finish the season as the leader he started out being.
Today's game should change all that talk. Greg McElroy did something many other big names at Alabama didn't do; stage a fourth-quarter comeback. When the chips were down, he became the on-field leader this team needs to make a title run.
With McElroy starting the first half missing wide-open receivers, and sure-handed teammates dropping the balls he did deliver, it would have been easy for McElroy to simply shrink into self pity.
However, this is man who never lost as a starter from High School to College, and he wasn't about to learn what it felt like today.
"Greg never gets down on himself and always believes he can make the plays we need to win." Saban said about McElroy. "It all comes down to making the right decisions and we all have faith that when the game's on the line that he'll do that."
Given the amount of time he was given by LSU's lack of a pass rush and his offensive line's pass protection it was apparent this was the perfect game for McElroy to not only add to his own personal stats, but put up huge numbers on the scoreboard for his team; and that's just what he did.
With a creampuff game ahead in the form of UT Chattanooga, McElroy has the chance to further polish his game for the season-ending showdown with Florida.
This game with 452 yards of total offense against a great LSU defense is getting back to the numbers that Alabama was posting when it was taking over from Florida in the rankings.
A Greg McElroy resurrection was forecast for this game and he delivered. For the Alabama fans, it's nice to have him 'back'.
