Fantasy Football Week 10 Waiver Wire Must-Adds

Moe MotonNov 5, 2019

The Bay Area is buzzing with quality quarterback play. Fantasy football managers should grab a particular pair of signal-callers while they're hot, especially with Carson Wentz and Tom Brady on bye in Week 10.

Aside from two new faces at quarterback on the waiver-wire radar, managers should also take a look at a running back who's flirted with RB2 status in multiple weeks this season. After 20 touches Sunday, he's back in consideration with a favorable matchup ahead.

This week's wide receiver suggestions feature a well-known talent on a new team and two under-the-radar names who've produced in passing offenses ranked 23rd or worse.

In a week with six teams on bye, streamer options become a little more important, but a majority of the players below might deserve to be on rosters for an extended period.

We'll focus on players owned in fewer than 70 percent of Yahoo leagues as of Monday 3 a.m. ET. The free-agent acquisition bids are based on $100 budgets in 12-team leagues.

QB Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco 49ers (66 Percent Owned)

1 of 6

Through much of the San Francisco 49ers' eight-game win streak, their No. 2-ranked defense and ground attack have garnered most of the credit. But over the last two games, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has come into national and fantasy focus.

Although Garoppolo didn't rack up many yards (175) against the Carolina Panthers in Week 8, he went 18-of-22 and threw two touchdowns with just one interception against a top-five unit. Garoppolo then threw four touchdowns to four different pass-catchers and finished 28-of-37 for 317 yards against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9.

Wideout Emmanuel Sanders' presence has added a spark to the 49ers' aerial attack since his arrival via trade from Denver.

Garoppolo, who has only 18 career starts, will continue to complement the Niners' strong rushing attack. But he's capable of carving up a below-average pass defense, as we witnessed last week against the Cardinals' 29th-ranked group.

Garoppolo will face the Seattle Seahawks' 28th-ranked pass defense and Arizona again over the next two weeks. He's a high-end streamer through Week 11.

Free-Agent Acquisition Budget (FAAB): $7

QB Derek Carr, Oakland Raiders (46 Percent Owned)

2 of 6

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr produced starter-level fantasy numbers over his last two games, finishing with 23.4 and 19.6 points in Weeks 8 and 9, respectively.

Raiders head coach Jon Gruden thinks Carr has played his best football since 2018, when the team turned over its coaching staff.

"Was as good as I've seen Derek Carr play since I've been here," Gruden told reporters after the Raiders' 31-24 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

Carr's progression in Gruden's system will yield fantasy benefits. Managers who used the Raiders quarterback as a streamer over the past two weeks can attest to the 28-year-old's strides this year.

The Raiders have a short turnaround before facing the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday. Their division rival ranks fifth in passing yards allowed but 14th in touchdowns surrendered through the air.

Gruden figures to test the Chargers' 20th-ranked run defense, but Carr has at least 285 yards and two scores in each of his last three outings. If you aren't comfortable starting him in Week 10, hold on to him for the following two matchups against the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets, who rank 22nd and 24th against aerial attacks, respectively.

RB Ronald Jones II, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (40 Percent Owned)

3 of 6

Earlier in the season, Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Ronald Jones II popped up as a potential flex option. He flashed in a few games, but he isn't a high-level asset on a pass-first team that ranks fifth in pass attempts compared to 14th in rushing attempts.

However, Jones hovers around RB2 and flex territory because he continues to flash as the Buccaneers' lead running back. The 22-year-old had 20 touches (18 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown plus two receptions for 15 yards) compared to Peyton Barber's four carries for 15 yards Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.

On Monday, head coach Bruce Arians told reporters that Jones will have an expanded role moving forward, which raises his fantasy value for the remainder of the season.

Jones doesn't provide much as a pass-catcher—he has only eight receptions for 124 yards through eight gamesbut in Week 10, he'll face a Cardinals defense that has allowed at least 100 rushing yards every game this season. Arizona gives up 4.5 yards per rushing attempt, which ranks 20th leaguewide.

Six teams are on bye in Week 10, which means running backs Leonard Fournette, Phillip Lindsay, Carlos Hyde, Sony Michel, Jordan Howard, Miles Sanders and Adrian Peterson won't be available. Jones could slide into the RB2 spot as a one-week rental with long-term flex appeal.

WR Josh Gordon, Seattle Seahawks (59 Percent Owned)

4 of 6

The Seattle Seahawks claimed Josh Gordon off waivers Friday, so he wasn't able to suit up for Week 9. However, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll told reporters that he plans to "take a look and see what he looks like" in practice this week.

Before a knee injury slowed him down, Gordon had a decent role with the New England Patriots, recording 20 catches for 287 yards and a touchdown. Although he hasn't reached paydirt since Week 1, the 28-year-old should have more opportunities in three-wide receiver sets with the Seahawks.

In Seattle, Tyler Lockett will likely remain the No. 1 pass-catching option. He had 23 more targets than rookie second-rounder DK Metcalf and tight end Will Dissly prior to Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. The latter landed on injured reserve with a torn Achilles after Week 6.

Gordon will compete with Metcalf for the No. 2 pass-catching role in Seattle. The rookie second-rounder hadn't registered more than four receptions or 90 receiving yards in a game until Sunday's six-catch, 123-yard performance.

While the youngster strives for consistency, the 6'3", 225-pound Gordon could become a valuable target.

"He's a big-play guy," Carroll told reporters. "He's been able to really stretch the field, and those I know that have worked with him and coached him, they rave about his talent and playmaking ability."

In other words, Gordon could provide WR2 value with a high ceiling.

He doesn't have a great matchup against the 49ers' top-ranked pass defense in Week 10, but he should be a keeper for the remainder of the season.

FAAB Amount: $10

WR Zach Pascal, Indianapolis Colts (20 Percent Owned)

5 of 6

Injuries have ravaged the Indianapolis Colts offense over the past few days.

Head coach Frank Reich said wideout T.Y. Hilton went down while preparing for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and will be out for 3-4 weeks, according to Jim Ayello of the Indianapolis Star. Meanwhile, quarterback Jacoby Brissett exited Sunday's game because of a knee injury.

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, Brissett suffered an MCL strain, but he may be able to suit up against the Miami Dolphins this coming Sunday.

Regardless of whether Brissett misses time, someone has to catch passes against the Dolphins' generous pass defense. That unit has allowed 19 scores in eight contests.

Backup quarterback Brian Hoyer filled in for Brissett against the Steelers and played well, throwing for 168 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. One of those scoring drives ended with Zach Pascal in the end zone, which isn't a fluke.

In Week 7, Pascal produced a breakout game against the Houston Texans, hauling in six receptions for 106 yards and two scores. The Old Dominion product ranks second on the team in receiving yards (321) and touchdowns (four).

With Hilton likely to miss multiple games, Pascal is the Colts' top pass-catching option for now. Against the Dolphins' porous pass defense, he could provide WR2 or flex value.

FAAB Amount: $5

WR Jamison Crowder, New York Jets (54 Percent Owned)

6 of 6

The 1-7 New York Jets should give up on their playoff hopes, but fantasy managers can hang on to a couple of offensive assets on the roster.

Those with running back Le'Veon Bell on their roster may be frustrated, but they can make the most of Gang Green's struggling offense with a pickup at wide receiver.

Although wideout Robby Anderson has significant upside because of his field-stretching ability, Jamison Crowder has been a steady contributor with quarterback Sam Darnold under center.

In three of Darnold's five starts, Crowder has hauled in at least six receptions and 83 yards. He saw nine or more targets in all three of those games, and he scored his first touchdown of the season Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

The Jets will face a string of mediocre or below-average pass defenses in New York (Giants), Washington, Oakland and Cincinnati in the coming weeks. If you have room for only one Jets wide receiver on your roster, make sure it's Crowder, who leads the Jets in catches (43), receiving yards (405) and targets (59).
