Chris Jericho and the 7 Best WWE, AEW Stars on the Mic in Wrestling Today

Aaron BowerOct 23, 2019

The art of cutting a good promo is one of the biggest strengths a professional wrestler can possess.

Some do it better than others, and those who are brilliant at it have the ability to go to the top of the industry.

With WWE now sparring with All Elite Wrestling on a weekly basis, the promos cut by wrestlers in both promotions will be more important than ever before.

Thankfully, both promotions have stars who are capable of captivating fans every time they step foot in the ring.

Here's a look at some of the best promo guys in both WWE and AEW.

7. Brock Lesnar

1 of 7

Perhaps a surprising entry to start, but there's no doubting that on the rare occasions Brock Lesnar speaks, you can't help but listen.

For the majority of his in-ring segments, The Beast Incarnate does little talking and is flanked by his advocate, Paul Heyman.

But when it's Lesnar's turn to talk, he's intense, captivating and surprisingly good with a microphone in his hand.

He seems to have little regard for WWE's watered-down approach to promos. He is very much old-school in regards to his promo work, not afraid of pushing the boundaries of what is acceptable on TV.

Is it a good thing he doesn't speak too often? Perhaps, because it allows the moments he snatches the microphone from Heyman to be a rare treat and something to look forward to.

6. Jon Moxley

Always one of the strongest promo men in WWE during his run as Dean Ambrose, Jon Moxley has taken that talent with him to the wider wrestling world.

As soon as he appeared on the indie circuit in promotions like New Japan Pro-Wrestling, he instantly had great charisma his promos. That has translated to the early weeks of All Elite Wrestling, too.

Moxley is intense, he's must-watch and grabs your attention every time he speaks. That's the sign of a strong promo worker.

5. Daniel Bryan

Whether it's as an ultra-popular babyface or a heel that people just can't stand, Daniel Bryan has always had people on the edge of their seat whenever he speaks.

Bryan's promos always feel as though they are coming directly from the heart, which is what makes him one of the best talkers in pro wrestling today.

Even when he was sidelined from competing and working as an authority figure in WWE, The Planet's Champion still had an aura that made him must-watch.

Now he's back in the ring, he's stepped it up once again. Arguably his best trait when it comes to promos is that he's simply unpredictable. You never know which Daniel Bryan you're going to get, and that normally makes for great entertainment.

4. Kevin Owens

From the moment he arrived on WWE's main roster to attack John Cena in 2015, Kevin Owens has always felt like one of those performers you just can't ignore.

The Canadian has the unique ability of getting fans to cheer no matter whether he's working as a babyface or a heel. That's perhaps part of the reason why he's working as a guy who seemingly does whatever he wants, whenever he wants at the moment.

The catalyst for that was his rivalry with Shane McMahon this summer, in which Owens seriously came into his own as a promo worker.

KO can make fans laugh, he can make them boo and he can make them sit up and pay attention to what's going on. That's what makes him one of the best in the business.

3. Samoa Joe

5 of 7

Samoa Joe is a one-man promo machine.

Way before he arrived in WWE, Joe was one of the best talkers in the business, and that hasn't changed with his arrival in the company several years ago.

Joe is very similar to Brock Lesnar in that he's unbelievably intense whenever a microphone is placed in front of him.

That usually means even though he's traditionally a heel, he can make you fall in love with him as a performer whenever words come out of his mouth.

It's a shame he's injured at the moment, because WWE is missing not only one of its best in-ring assets, but also one of its best talkers.

2. The Miz

6 of 7

It's safe to say that The Miz probably won't go down as one of WWE's greatest in-ring talents, but he will certainly be remembered for what he does with a microphone in his hand.

Miz is perhaps the best talker in WWE right now. And he's been delivering when it comes to promos for years. His defining moment as a performer came during a promo, with his legendary Talking Smack showdown with Daniel Bryan.

It established him as a talent that fans simply couldn't ignore, and made him probably the guy he is today.

Even with his run with the WWE Championship earlier in his career, Miz never really felt like a guy who was worthy of being in the main event. But in recent years, he's shown that he deserves to be at the top end of any card due to the fact that, in his own words, he's simply must-see.

A large part of that is down to how well, and how often, he delivers when it comes to promos.

1. Chris Jericho

7 of 7

Chris Jericho is wrestling's undisputed champion when it comes to delivering a promo.

He has reinvented himself time and again during his illustrious career as a performer, but one thing that has never changed is his ability to be captivating with a microphone in his hand.

From his legendary 1,004 holds promo which is still regarded as one of the greatest in wrestling history, to his first showdown with The Rock on his WWE debut.

Even in more recent years, Jericho has pushed the boundaries for what is considered a great promo. Think back to his ability to turn a simple list into the hottest thing in WWE, or even how his friendship with Kevin Owens was unmissable on a weekly basis.

That hasn't changed with his switch to AEW, either. It's only early days for the promotion, but Jericho is a fitting leader of the biggest faction in the promotion, as proved by his stellar promo introducing The Inner Circle.

He may now be a veteran, but nobody is taking the title of best talker in pro wrestling away from Jericho any time soon.
