A Hope for the Final Curtain to Fall in Chicago
We all know that Matt Hughes has been promised the fight with Matt Serra, which is long overdue after being scheduled for Dec. 30, 2007.
Circumstances beyond anyone's control caused a series of events to unfold that are still having an affect on MMA and the UFC.
Matt Serra injured his back and was unable to fight Matt Hughes in December.
Georges St. Pierre agreed to step in and fight Matt Hughes, causing people to believe that he had saved Christmas for fans everywhere, and kept Dana White from having a "blue Christmas and a very un-Happy New Year."
Georges defeated Hughes and was given the gift of a Montreal fight scheduled for April 19, 2008 with Matt Serra.
To bring things full circle, on June 7, 2008, Thiago Alves beat Hughes. Matt Hughes talked about the promised fight to come with Matt Serra, which is yet to be announced.
If this fight is to be Hughes' last, then hopefully Dana White will grant fond wishes and announce that it will occur in Chicago, Illinois.
This would be a momentous event for Matt Hughes' home state and be close enough for the town of Hillsboro to attend.
Win or lose, I am sure that having the event hosted in Illinois would mean as much to him as the Montreal fight meant to Georges St. Pierre.
If it were to be Hughes' last fight, it would be appropriate to announce his placement in the UFC Hall of Fame, in his home state in front of his friends and family.
Finally, it could probably be arranged for Matt's brother Mark to appear on the same card, since he recently signed an exclusive contract with the UFC.
If this all occurred on New Years— Wow! I predict sellout and a big time party!
