Newcastle Re-Naming: What Went Through Their Minds?!

Russell HughesNov 5, 2009

The Emirates Stadium. The JJB Stadium. The Reebok Stadium.

These are a small example of all the stadiums that have had the naming rights sold to the sponsor. And now one more joins this league. The proud St. James Park will now be rebranded sportsdirect.com@St. James Park. Rolls off the tongue doesn't it.

A homeless, deluded, crack addict could see that this could never, ever be a good idea. So it begs the question, why would a clever (he has, after all made millions) think that this would be a good thing.

Perhaps it is a last throw of the dice, a last chance to get his brand burned into the brain of 40,000 Geordies. Does he not think that a boycott is more likely then everyone in Newcastle suddenly deciding to buy their cheap tracksuit bottoms from his store?

And do you think Sunderland fans will be filled with enthusiasm to be indirectly supporting their most bitter rivals?

However he has this could backfire spectacularly. Already hated by the vast majority of the faithful, they blame him for relegation and the Kevin Keegan fiasco, this name change can only bring more rage and indignity from the fans onto him, and make his remaining time at the club very uncomfortable indeed. And i have a feeling that the name change will be ignored by just about everyone.

And the justification for this? The Gallogate end has sports direct writing above it, so in the eyes of upper managment that makes it okay to turn the geordies most hallowed ground into a website?

Wrong.
