Can Arsenal Sweep Clean Three Titles This Season?

Ashraf habibNov 5, 2009

Arsene Wenger has never been as harsh as the last two weeks, hasn’t he?

After his team tore apart Harry Redknapp’s Spurs at the Emirates, Wenger furiously threw his jacket to whoever could get hold of it, like an obsessed man who has lost a seven figure paying job. Isn’t he making a point to his players that he doesn’t want to face Arsenal boo boys for questioning at the end of the season empty handed?

Gunners’ boss has trendily borrowed the body language of insatiable managers like Sir Alex Ferguson, Inter Milan big head, Jose Mourinho and Barca’s young assassin, Pep Guardiola.

Wenger is trying to tell his players, time for aimless stuff is dead and forgotten and whoever in his squad is not prepared for it must prepare for an exit from the first team.

But he must get the returns from his young squad who, to a larger extent, haven’t understood what is going on at the club. Apparently, there is a handful that seems to read the minds of the manager. Andrey Arshavin, who has continued to prove to the Emirates crowd that he is a good bargain, continues to attack and provoke his team mates and the manager. Arshavin shows his colleagues he is up to the game. He is a quality addition to the Arsenal team though used by Wenger in wrong positions. He proved mid week that if utilised well, the gunners can yield more benefits from his expensive boots.

Other than Arshavin, Cesc Fabregas (contender for Ryan Giggs’ player of the year award) has orchestrated not only his creativity for Arsenal but has also gone on to add his weight to the goals. If he is not playing just to improve his ratings then Gunners will have so much to cheer for at the end of this season.

The two central defenders, William Gallas and Vermaelen, have formed the kind of relationship that many at Arsenal have been salivating for. Many years of calamitous partnerships seem like history at the club. While the Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic style is crumbling fast at Manchester United, Arsenal are jubilating with the current partnership that has also played a huge role in the goals the team has scored this season.

Song has come of age and needs to up his game to match Patrick Vieira’s heroic performances for the Gunners.

While some of the stars mentioned have written their names to Wenger’s cause, there is a wrong to right among some of the players who are supposed to sound big.

Robin van Persie is perhaps the next big thing other than Fabregas among the Arsenal faithful. But, while many ranted at Emmanuel Adebayor (I know many Arsenal fans do not want to read about him) for putting to waste several would be chances, van Persie is no different. Arsenal need top performances from van Persie, whose services have been below 50% due to his numerous injuries. He must repay the club, but not blast wide chances.

Diaby, Almunia and others are yet to guarantee Wenger the Premier League title.

Wenger must borrow a leaf from some big teams with big squads. The simple reason is that apart from Arshavin, Arsenal players are injury prone and when the wrong angle strikes the Emirates, the top drawers collapse all at once (recall when Adebayor, Eduardo, van Persie and Fabregas subsequently were kicked out almost at the same time). What would this mean to the club? While the team looks fresh, Wenger must try to rotate the team, apart from the back four. Indeed, Arsenal led the Premier League table to the end of Christmas, only to fall out in January fail to recover.

Aaron Ramsey, a highly rated Wales attacking midfielder, Sami Nasr, Denilson and Wilshire must be chipped in to keep some of the top stars fresh. Arsenal boast a big squad this season to match any of the big four. It is the ingredient required of a team of such big-dos as the Champions League and Premier League.

Therefore, while the Gunners can boast many star names, Wenger must step forward to brave the marathon with the anger witnessed in the last two weeks.
