Oregon Football Campus Voice: Ducks Romp Trojans, Students Rejoice

k sNov 3, 2009

By now, everybody in the nation knows what happened at Autzen stadium on Saturday night. Oregon completely dismantled the mighty USC Trojans and embarrassed a proud and mighty institution, etc.

That being said, only a few thousand know exactly what transpired on that night inside the raucous Autzen stadium.

Not to discredit those of you who watched it in your warm, cozy living room with your legs up on the ottoman and a nice cool beverage in hand, but you will never fully understand what kind of experience those few hours were.

Oregon students and fans were in rare form on Saturday and brought their best to what will become a legendary game in the history of University of Oregon football.

As you may know, I had been furious with the ticketing system that past week because thousands of students here were unable to claim a ticket to last weekend’s game.

However, everything worked out and I managed to finagle myself into the game by channeling my inner James Bond. I wont go into any detail, but there may be a few lapses in the security at Autzen.

Anyways, upon entering the crazed, circus-like atmosphere that surrounded the stadium, I could tell that there was something magical in the air and that this night would not be like any other.

From the students dressed in the most random assortment of Halloween garb, including Elmo and Cookie Monster, a banana man, and the likeness of Jesus, to the regular fans actually following the student’s wishes and dressing in black to fulfill the "blackout," and to the unusually low number of opponent fans in attendance.

The last in that list was the one that astonished me the most. It may have been because the University of Oregon didn’t give as many tickets to USC as they have to other schools, but I, and many other students, liked to attribute it to USC fans not wanting to witness the thrashing that they knew was coming.

By the time I had engineered myself past the second security checkpoint and into the student section of the stadium, Autzen was filled to the brim with rabid Oregon fans sitting on the edge of their seats watching in glee as the team jetted out onto the pitch to begin the festivities.

Students had already began chants of “F--- the Trojans!” and the usual chorus of “Go Ducks!”

From this point forward my memory is so overwhelmed by joy and ecstasy that it is impossible to describe, so I shall enlighten you to some of the highlights of the student section.

I remember Halloween candy being flung into the air by students after a first quarter touchdown.

I remember students falling and crashing into other students creating an avalanche of Duck fans after each and every touchdown Oregon scored.

I remember my throat burning so badly that the only cure was to yell louder and more often.

I remember the sound of more than five thousand sets of keys jingling as the students wished the Trojans a safe and enjoyable trip back to Los Angeles.

I remember students waiting impatiently as they filled the lower section of the student seating to scale the walls and run wild on the Autzen turf and celebrate the victory with their team.

Other than those memories, there is nothing I can do to better describe the most hostile environment I have ever been a part of.

I think I speak for every single Oregon student and fan that witnessed the massacre of USC Saturday when I quote Sublime’s song “What Happened?” in regards to their Sunday morning.

“Wake up in the morning

clock says half past one

I have no sunglasses as I step into the sun

There’s no recollection

of the evil things I’ve done

my head feels like I must have had some fun…

What happened?”

GO DUCKS!!!!!!
