Fourth seed Karolina Pliskova enjoyed a straightforward victory over Croatia's Ajla Tomljanovic, while Elina Svitolina was beaten in three sets by Victoria Azarenka.

Meanwhile, David Goffin came from behind to beat Stan Wawrinka in three sets in Rome, while Nick Kyrgios knocked out No. 12 seed Daniil Medvedev.

After pulling out of the Madrid Open earlier this month with a back injury while 3-0 down to Alize Cornet in her opening match, Wozniacki only lasted slightly longer this time around before a different injury curtailed her efforts.

The Dane battled back from being 5-2 down to take the first set to a tiebreaker, playing some excellent points along the way:

She did so despite needing to have her calf strapped halfway through, but after losing the tiebreaker, she made the decision to withdraw.

Collins will advance to the second round, where the American will face Garbine Muguruza.

Wawrinka looked to have erased the disappointment at the Madrid Open, where he was comfortably dismissed by Rafael Nadal 6-1, 6-2 in the quarter-final, after he edged out Goffin in the first set.

However, the Swiss player quickly collapsed, winning just two games in the final two sets.

Meanwhile, Kyrgios employed a novel method of opening his match against Medvedev:

The pair had never met before but were relatively evenly matched, with a single break of serve deciding each set.

The Australian will play qualifier Casper Ruud in the next round, while Goffin plays No. 7 seed Juan Martin del Potro.

Zverev won the Italian Open in 2017 but saw his hopes of winning the title for a second time ended early as his slump in form continued in Rome.

The fourth seed did have his chances in the opening set, but Berrettini came out on top in the crucial moments at the end of the first set:

The two players traded breaks of serve in the second set, but errors from Zverev proved costly and handed the Italian a victory that delighted the crowd:

It is an impressive win for the in-form Italian, who picks up his first top-five win, while Zverev continues to look short of confidence and well below his best.
