A Bad Night Coming For All The Couture Fans

Jessy MorrisNov 3, 2009

The Natural, Captain America and Father Time are some of the nicknames best suited to describe the legendary Randy Couture. Couture has fought inside the UFC octagon for over 10 years, won titles in both the heavyweight and light-heavyweight divisions and has been inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. At 46 years old, it's safe to say that Randy has done it all in the Mixed Martial Arts world, but still, he continues to compete.

At UFC 105, he will move back down to the 205 division for the first time in three years to fight former heavyweight fighter Brandon "The Truth" Vera. Some people have already counted Brandon Vera out of the fight due to his lackluster performances since dropping down to light-heavyweight, but it's a mistake.

Brandon Vera moved down from the heavyweight division at Ultimate Fight Night: Silva vs Irvin and failed to put on an impressive 205 debut against Reese Andy. Even with a win, Vera's weight cutting proved to be a bigger challenge then anticipated. He then suffered a loss a split decision to Keith Jardine at UFC 89 and his future at light-heavyweight was more then uncertain.

An impressive win over Michael Patt in his next fight at UFC 96 got the momentum flowing again. In his last fight, he took apart a dangerous opponent in Krzysztof Soszynski which Vera didn't get enough of credit for.

Brandon Vera looked very impressive against Soszynski, picking him apart on the feet. He now has the opportunity of a lifetime as he collides with UFC legend, Randy Couture. The fight was rumored to be a No. 1 contender's match for the light-heavyweight belt, but after the controversial ending to the Machida/Shogun fight at UFC 104,who knows what will happen.

Randy is coming off two straight losses and it seems time is finally catching up to him. He still loves to compete, he's still in shape, but he perhaps isn't as fast or as strong as he was five years ago. In his last fight, he was out-psyched by Nogueira and rocked on more then one occasion.

With all due respect to Nogueira, Brandon Vera is a much more accomplished striker and will most likely finish off Couture on the feet. It's no secret that Couture needs to clinch and get the takedown to win the fight, but will he be able to do so?

This is actually a much bigger fight then fans may think, the winner will move up really high in the rankings and may even get a title shot.

A win for either men would be huge at this point.

As much as it pains me to say this, I'm not liking Randy's chances at UFC 105. The old Captain America needs to show up, the man that dominated Liddell, Ortiz and Belfort but I'm afraid that man is no longer here.
