There Is Something Special About The Crimson Tide's Blocked Field Goals

It’s déjà vu all over again. The year was 2006 and the University of Florida was playing South Carolina at the swamp. Florida was a 12 ½ point favorite but the old ball coach had other ideas. This was Spurriers first trip back to Gainesville for a game since leaving the gators for the NFL.

South Carolina scored first to go up 7 zip in the first quarter but Florida answered to tie in the second stanza and at the intermission it was knotted at 7 apiece. There was to be no scoring in the third quarter so as we entered the forth it remained a 7-7 deadlock.

South Carolina scored 9 in the forth but Florida put up 10. The difference in the ball game was two blocked field goal attempts by South Carolina both by Jarvis Moss. The final block came with 8 seconds to play. Does this sound eerily familiar?

This season, Alabama was hanging on for dear life against an inspired Tennessee team and it took two blocked field goal attempts by the Tide to preserve the victory.  

Florida went on after those two blocked field goals in that South Carolina game and won the SEC and a national title.

Now I am not saying Bama will win the national title because we blocked two field goals against Tennessee much like Florida did against South Carolina but it is an interesting coincidence don’t you think?

If the stars align and we all cross our fingers, the Crimson Tide could play in the Rose Bowl in the national title game for the first time since 1945. Alabama steam rolled Southern Cal in that game and so humiliated the westerners that no southern team has been invited back. This could be our year to return. Wonder what Harry Gilmer and Dixie Howell would say about that
