Texas A&M 35-Iowa State 10: Aggie Offense Continues to Thrive

Jeff ShullNov 2, 2009

The Aggies were called into question after a demoralizing loss at Kansas State two weeks ago.

Even I questioned the direction they were headed and placed most of the blame on Mike Sherman in the midseason review .

The team has responded by going into Lubbock and winning in a dominant fashion for the first time since 1993, and now this weekend they destroyed an inferior Iowa State opponent at Kyle Field.

This was the same Iowa State team that went into Lincoln, Nebraska and handed the Cornhuskers a defeat that nobody in the world expected.

The Aggies dominated on offense like they have so many times this season. They put up 501 yards of offense behind an incredible performance by QB Jerrod Johnson.

Johnson finished the day 23-of-28 with 234 yards and three touchdowns, as well as a touchdown run on a fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line.

Cyrus Gray continues to improve and is one of the premier tailbacks in the Big 12 so far in conference play. He had another dazzling performance, piling up 119 yards on the ground. He also scored on a 16-yard screen pass from Johnson.

Freshman sensation Christine Michael continues to be a premier backup for Gray. He had 63 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown, more than satisfactory for the second-string player. Michael is definitely giving the fans something to look forward to next year.

Jeff Fuller, in his second game coming off a broken leg, scored his first touchdown since week one. He was not part of the game plan last week against Texas Tech, as the coaching staff is easing him into the lineup.

Fuller and Johnson developed a solid rapport last season, and teams better watch out if they rekindle that chemistry.

The best, and probably least appreciated, part of the game was the defense being able to shut down Iowa State RB Alexander Robinson.

Robinson has been the best back in the Big 12 so far this season, but the wrecking crew defense held him to just 76 yards on 20 carries, his lowest total of the season besides the Kansas State game in which he left early due to injury.

The defense stopped the Cyclones in every facet of the game and forced several key turnovers to solidify an overall dominant performance by the maroon and white.

Texas A&M is one win away from being bowl eligible, but the toughest part of their schedule is looming. They play at Colorado and Oklahoma and then finish with Baylor and Texas.

I was skeptical of whether or not the Aggies could make it to six wins after losing to Kansas State, but now anything less would be a disappointment.
