New Orleans Saints Are For Real

andy mungerOct 29, 2009

The New Orleans Saints have got off to their best start since 1991. Their remarkable comeback last Sunday against the Miami Dolphins was perhaps the seasons tell tailing moment. Drew Brees shows remarkable composure behind big early in a game. This feat will surely come to be important when they get into a playoff game. It is all but assured that they will be a playoff team. This team will now keep playing for an undefeated season, or at least a very strong 14-2 home field advantage team. I can't see how this team will not be one of the two NFC teams that will not have to play the first week of the playoffs. They will be home watching their semifinal conference opponent have to win in order to travel to New Orleans.

There are those critics who will compare this Saints team to the one that started of 7-0 in the early nineties. That team struggled at the end and finished 11-5 and bowed out early in the playoffs. Bobby Hebert was their quarterback and drew Brees is way better than that guy. There is no comparison and the team in 1991 didn't have Reggie Bush or a strong running back. This team is just plain dominant and it is finally their turn for the spotlight. When they lost to the Chicago Bears in the NFC Championship back in 05, I fully expected the Saints to come back the following season with vengeance and do what they are doing now. I was surprised and disappointed in their performance in 2006. I knew this team was on the verge and was mystified how they regressed. It took a few more years with much of the same cast intact, but the saints are finally showing the Super Bowl caliber team they have had for a while. This is the year they return to the NFC title game and a chance for their first ever Super Bowl Appearance.
