Week Eight Rankings: Top 15 TE

Eric StashinOct 27, 2009

In any given week, it feels like any tight end can step out of obscurity into posting a good week. Two weeks ago it was Zach Miller who had 139 receiving yards, which he followed up by getting just 15.

With that said, let’s take a look at how this week’s rankings look:

  1. Dallas Clark—Indianapolis Colts vs. San Francisco
  2. Antonio Gates—San Diego Chargers vs. Oakland
  3. Owen Daniels—Houston Texans at Buffalo
  4. Tony Gonzalez—Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans
  5. Vernon Davis—San Francisco 49ers at Indianapolis
  6. Jeremy Shockey—New Orleans Saints vs. Atlanta
  7. Jason Witten—Dallas Cowboys vs. Seattle
  8. Greg Olsen—Chicago Bears vs. Cleveland
  9. Brent Celek—Philadelphia Eagles vs. New York Giants
  10. Vishante Shiancoe—Minnesota Vikings at Green Bay
  11. John Carlson—Seattle Seahawks at Dallas
  12. Tony Sheffler—Denver Broncos at Baltimore
  13. Todd Heap—Baltimore Ravens vs. Denver
  14. Donald Lee—Green Bay Packers vs. Minnesota
  15. Kevin Boss—New York Giants at Philadelphia

Thoughts

  • If Andre Johnson is unable to play this Sunday, Owen Daniels becomes the best option in the passing game for the team. That could mean a huge game, like his 22 catches and three touchdowns over the last three weeks weren’t enough.
  • Alex Smith and Vernon Davis clearly have a rapport, as could be seen by the three touchdown catches he had in the second half this past week. With Smith being named the starter and a shootout possible with the Colts, Davis could be in store for another big day.
  • Does Jason Witten need that other passing option to open things up for him? We’ll soon find out, as defenses begin to focus more on Miles Austin.
  • With Jermichael Finley unlikely to play in Week Eight, Donald Lee should get additional looks and therefore could potentially be a usable option.
  • There have been conflicting reports as to whether or not Kevin Boss suffered a concussion after making a remarkable catch against the Cardinals. He’s a low-end option as it is, but if he plays, he always has potential to put up a big day.

What are your thoughts? Who was left off the list? Who should be higher? Who should be lower?
