Submission Of The Night: UFC's Tallest Fighter Stefan Struve Wins Again

Kountry KingOct 25, 2009

Standing at 6 foot 11 inches, Stefan Struve is no ordinary mixed martial arts fighter.

"The Skyscraper", as they call him is, simply put, the tallest competitor in the UFC.

Although he is only 21 years old, he boasts an impressive record (18-3, 2-1 UFC, 14 submissions) , with most of his wins coming either by way of rear naked choke or his infamous arm triangles.

While most of MMA's giants have historically been considered too slow and clumsy to stand a chance against the worlds most elite fighters, Struve poses a different aspect.

He's lean

Stefan Struve weighs 240 pounds.

For a man that stands 6'11, thats fairly light.

He uses his long legs and 84 inch reach significantly to his advantage, skillfully pulling off triangle chokes and body kicks with ease while taking minimal damage.

If you dont believe me, then take last nights fight against Chase Gormley for instance.

Gormley looked strong earlier on, going for a quick takedown but once on the canvas that was all she wrote.

Struve simply waited for his chance to strike and seized the moment.

I adore Lyoto Machida as much as the next hardcore MMA fan, but after watching last nights performance, his famous phrase "karate is back" is now left in question marks.

Its now unclear if we have reached the Machida Era as Joe Rogan had previously proclaimed.

However, my fellow fight fans, instead of focusing on whether or not we have reached the Machida Era, perhaps we should be asking ourselves a new question..

Is MMA on the verge of becoming dominated by giants with the skill and technique of a true champion?

That fight fans, remains to be seen.
