Mark Teixeira 'Not Surprised' by Robinson Cano PED Use, Notes Biogenesis Link

Alec NathanMay 17, 2018

Former New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira said Thursday he's "not surprised" Robinson Cano get suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball after he tested positive for a banned substance.

Specifically, Teixeira noted it was hard to be stunned by the news because Cano's assistant was named in the 2013 Biogenesis scandal.

"Robbie Cano's assistant was on the list for Biogenesis," Teixeira said on The Michael Kay Show, per NJ.com's Brendan Kuty. "Of course he had his assistant buy stuff for him. Alex Rodriguez got popped by Biogenesis and Melky got popped. They're his best friends. When someone gets lumped into that group, it's because there's evidence, there's a paper trail, there's a smoke trail."

On Tuesday, MLB announced Cano had been banned 80 games after he tested positive for furosemide, a diuretic most commonly used as a masking agent to hide the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

"I really don't want to get into too much detail," Teixeira said of his former teammate. "I love Robbie. But, yeah, I'm just not surprised. I don't really want to go too much further. But I think a lot of people are kind of saying the same thing."

Cano, 35, slashed .287/.385/.441 with four home runs and 23 RBI prior to his suspension.
