Having put their differences aside in recent months to become friends, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn may renew hostilities in the near future.
Wrestling Observer Radio's Dave Meltzer (h/t SEScoops.com's Jon Fuentes) reported WWE is building to a feud between the pair of former NXT champions.
While they've teased breaking up, Owens and Zayn have basically been on the same page ever since Zayn saved Owens at Hell in a Cell last October. He pulled Owens off an announce table just as Shane McMahon was about to land after jumping off the top of the cell.
It was a shocking moment that built off years of history between Owens and Zayn, spanning not only their WWE careers but also their work on the independent circuit.
Because of how many times they have crossed paths in the past, some fans might feel a bit underwhelmed by the prospect of another long-term storyline where Owens and Zayn are on opposite sides.
At the same time, their friendship has created a new dynamic in their rivalry, and sure, one guy is going to turn on the other, but that doesn't have to make it any less compelling when it actually happens.
Owens' betrayal of Chris Jericho is a perfect example of that. Everybody could see the writing on the wall—a WrestleMania match between Owens and Jericho—but Owens attacking Y2J during the "Festival of Friendship" was pitch perfect.
The only question is how slowly WWE is willing to let everything play out. WrestleMania season is still more than six months away, so SummerSlam 2018 in August is a much more likely event to have Owens and Zayn resolve any dispute.
