Report: Chelsea 'Considering' Move for Tottenham Manager Mauricio Pochettino

Rory MarsdenMay 15, 2018

Chelsea could reportedly make a move for Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino to replace Antonio Conte if the Italian leaves in the summer.

According to Sky Sports News, Conte is expected to depart Stamford Bridge after Saturday's FA Cup final against Manchester United, and Pochettino is on a shortlist of targets that also includes former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique and Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri.

The Argentinian has been in charge at Tottenham since 2014 and has overseen three consecutive top-three finishes in the Premier League since 2015-16.

Given the relatively limited resources he has been working with, Pochettino has done a remarkable job.

After Spurs' final game of the 2017-18 season against Leicester City on Sunday, the 46-year-old called on club chairman Daniel Levy "to be brave and take risks."

Per David Hytner in the Guardian, his comments "sounded suspiciously like an ultimatum" that Pochettino needs backing in the transfer market if he is to stay put at Spurs.

He has earned a reputation that could see him poached by a club with much bigger resources than the north London side.

Chelsea are one of those clubs—see their net spend relative to Spurs since Pochettino took over, per Sky Sports' Kaveh Solhekol:

However, at present, moving from Tottenham to Chelsea would be a step down for the former Southampton and Espanyol boss.

After winning the Premier League title last term Chelsea finished fifth in 2017-18, so will not have UEFA Champions League football next season.

Spurs, meanwhile, are moving into their new stadium for the 2018-19 campaign and are on an upward curve in the Champions League as they look to become regulars in the competition.

It would also be a controversial move for Pochettino to swap Spurs for London rivals Chelsea, and even if the Blues do try to tempt him away it seems unlikely he would make the move.
