Preakness 2018 Horses: Entry List, Vegas Odds and Favorites

David McCrackenMay 14, 2018

Although the field of horses for the 2018 Preakness Stakes lacks star power, it's (finally) beginning to take shape.

With Kentucky Derby winner Justify looking to clinch the second leg of this year's Triple Crown, there is an obvious lack of competition going up against the three-year-old colt in Baltimore this month as many horses from the Derby won't be participating.

This is nothing new, however, as last year's Preakness field saw just half of the Derby's participants take to the track in 2017, but it's still disappointing for many horse racing fanatics looking for some entertainment.

One horse who will look to upset Justify will be Good Magic, who gave Justify a run for his money at Churchill Downs, where Justify clinched the Derby by 2 ½ lengths.

Other than Good Magic, however, there isn't much to get excited about just yet.

Here's a quick look at the information you'll need to know ahead of the Preakness Stakes:

Odds

There isn't a lot going on in terms of odds for this year's Preakness, as the field of horses has yet to take its final form.

The most recent odds available from OddsShark came a couple of days after the Kentucky Derby, with Justify being the odds-on to win the second leg of the Triple Crown.

As for winning all three legs of the Triple Crown itself, OddsShark has Justify listed at +140 (bet $100 to win $140) to win the Triple Crown and -185 for no Triple Crown winner.

Easy Win for Justify?

After a stellar performance at Churchill Downs despite the horrendous racing conditions, Justify is coming into the Preakness as the odds-on favorite. Racing on a shorter track at Pimlico Race Course, Justify could perform even better this time around, as long as the course isn't as muddy as the Derby was.

Nevertheless, a win for Justify would put the colt in the driving seat going to New York for the Belmont Stakes, as he looks to become the first horse since American Pharoah in 2015 to win the Triple Crown.

But would it be fair to be critical of Justify's legacy on the track if he were to win this second leg in Baltimore against lacking competition?

One of the would-be top contenders in this year's Preakness, Bolt d'Oro, won't be participating. Good Magic put up a good fight against Justify at the Derby, but no other horse really did.

There isn't much for Good Magic to ride for at this stage of the Triple Crown race after losing the first leg, but a rematch against Justify is worth going out there on the track, according to his trainer Chad Brown, per the Baltimore Sun (h/t Kentucky.com):

"I think it's a great opportunity for the horse. I really don't have anything else planned for him before, say, either the Haskell or the Jim Dandy anyway. That said, I wouldn't do it just because he's going to get a bit of a freshening. He has to be doing well, and he's doing exceptionally well. He's doing far better than I expected exiting the Derby. It's remarkable to see how well the horse is moving and his energy level. He already has his weight back. He just looks great. I'm excited about it."

This race for the time being—unless the field suddenly and magically takes a different shape—will literally be a two-horse race between Justify and Good Magic. Is that enough to get horse racing fans excited about this year's Preakness? It looks like it's going to have to be.
