There was no doubting Webb Simpson during the final round of The Players Championship.

Simpson built a seven-shot lead through the first three rounds of the Players and took advantage of the work he did to earn a solid four-stroke victory in the tournament known as the fifth major at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Simpson reached the championship with a score of 18-under par 270, and it was his first victory after 107 starts, ending a four-and-one-half year dry spell.

The champion did not play as well Sunday as he did in the first three rounds, and he limped home after hitting his second shot on the 18th hole in the water. However, he had such a big lead that the double bogey didn't matter. Simpson shot a one-over 73 in the final round.

Simpson had played so well and had such a commanding lead that his name was etched on the championship trophy before he finished his round.

Charl Schwartzel, Xander Schauffele and Jimmy Walker finished tied for second with scores of 14-under for the tournament. All three shot 67 in the final round.

Simpson earned $1.98 million for his victory in the tournament with a $10.5 million purse. He spoke with NBC's Steve Sands after the final hole.

"You would think leading by seven would be great, but it was tough," Simpson said. "This win means everything. There's so many people that are behind me and I am so grateful."

Among those he credited was his caddie Paul Tesori, and he spoke with Golf Channel after the tournament. "This was the most exhausting tournament I've ever been a part of," Tesori said. "This was the hardest one by far. When you go out there with that big a lead, there's only one expectation, and you see a four-shot differential on the scoreboard, you are just never comfortable."

Tiger Woods made a charge during the final round until he bogeyed the 14th hole.

Tiger Woods faded toward the end of his final round, but he put on a charge through the first 13 holes of the round. He was six-under par to that point, when he came to the challenging par-4 hole. Woods appeared to be in a position to make a birdie after piping his drive 354 yards down the middle of the fairway, and he was left with a wedge shot to the green.

Woods landed the ball in a near-perfect spot, but he had so much backspin on the ball that it rolled off the green and he ended up missing his par putt. It was his first bogey of the day, and it took much of the steam away from his game.

Tiger also found the water on the island-green 17th hole, and he finished his round with a three-under par score of 69. Woods shot an 11-under score of 277 for the tournament and finished tied for 11th.

Brooks Koepka had the best round of the day, as he shot a nine-under 63. He was also 11-under par for the four rounds and was among those golfers who tied for 11th.

Schwartzel, Schauffele and Walker earned $821,333 each for finishing in a tie for second. Jason Day and Jason Dufner tied for fifth and earned $418,000 each. Here's a link to the final scoreboard, along with the prize money for all the players who made it through the first cut. Nine players who made the original cut did not make the secondary cut after Saturday's round, but they still were paid for their efforts.
