Cowboys News: Dak Prescott Will Get Paid What 'He Deserves,' Says Stephen Jones

While Dak Prescott is just two years into his four-year rookie contract, the Dallas Cowboys are already discussing how much his next deal will be worth.       

"It's going to be as he deserves," executive vice president Stephen Jones said Wednesday, per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. "He was a fourth-round pick. No one deserves to get paid fairly more than he does."

Jones also noted the market could dictate a high salary.

"We all see what some of the other guys are who aren't Aaron Rodgers, who aren’t Matt Ryan [are getting paid]," he added. "He’s going to do well. We certainly know that’s going to happen. We’ve got that planned in our budgeting for the salary cap."

Ryan recently agreed to a five-year, $150 million extension, although the realization is that even the less proven quarterbacks have received large deals in recent years.

Jimmy Garoppolo signed a deal worth up to $137.5 million over five years despite limited playing time. Matthew Stafford has an average annual value of $27 million on his contract.

In the meantime, Prescott is set to make just $630,000 in base salary in 2018, per Spotrac. His cap hit of $725,848 ranks just 60th among quarterbacks in the NFL and 37th among players on the Cowboys.

These types of numbers are because he was a fourth-round pick, but they're hardly what you would expect from a player who started every game at quarterback over the last two seasons. The 2016 Offensive Rookie of the Year has a 22-10 record as a starter, and the team has faith he will make an even bigger impact going forward.

"I just want Dak to go out and be MVP this year of the NFL. That's what I want," Jones said. "Then, we'll deal with [the contract]."

This could put a lot of pressure on Prescott's 2018 performance, but in any case, he should be in for a major raise once his deal is up in 2020.
