Sunrisers Hyderabad consolidated their position at the top of the IPL 2018 standings with a five-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday.

The victory means Sunrisers are now two points clear at the top of the table and destined for a place in the play-offs, while Bangalore's hopes of making it through look extremely bleak.

ESPNcricinfo showed the final score from Monday's match:

Sunrisers Hyderabad (146/10) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (141/6) by 5 runs

Sunrisers put in a brilliant bowling display to successfully defend their score of 146 against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Bangalore handed Moeen Ali his IPL debut and started well as Alex Hales was bowled by Tim Southee. However, Kane Williamson was again in good form and hit 56 off 39 balls to steady the Sunrisers.

It was a man-of-the-match display by the New Zealander, per Cricbuzz:

A strong finish from Bangalore looked to have given them hope of victory over the table-toppers. The visitors took seven wickets in the last five overs for just 37 to limit the hosts to 146.

However, Sunrisers have impressed throughout IPL 2018 and did so again with a fine defensive performance, although they had to endure a nervy finish.

The game was in the balance until the last over when some inspired bowling from Bhuvneshwar Kumar secured victory.

Cricbuzz neatly summed up his contribution:

It was agonisingly close for Royal Challengers Bangalore, but they could not do quite enough, and it's a damaging defeat for their play-off hopes.

Only the top four teams qualify for the play-offs meaning that Sunrisers' victory leaves them almost certain to make it through.

Second-placed Chennai Super Kings are also in great shape and only need one more win to secure their play-off place. They could achieve that next time out as they face bottom side Rajasthan Royals.

The Royals have really struggled in IPL 2018, and Ben Stokes, the most expensive player in the 2018 auction, has failed to impress. They will have to win all of their remaining fixtures to have any chance, which looks a tall order.

Kings XI Punjab and the Kolkata Knight Riders look set to fill the remaining two places, but defending champions Mumbai Indians can't be written off just yet.

Mumbai had a poor start to the competition but have come back into contention with three wins from their last four. They take on Kolkata on Wednesday in what could prove to be a crucial clash.
