Smith played football at the University of Georgia for three years from 2015 to 2017. The 21-year-old was a consensus All-American, SEC Defensive Player of the Year and Butkus Award winner as the nation's best linebacker last season.

The Bulldogs named Smith one of their permanent team captains last year, along with running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel and offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn. He led the defense with 137 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks as a junior in 2017.

The Bears selected Smith eighth overall in the 2018 draft.
