Kolkata Knight Riders (180/4) beat Chennai Super Kings (177/5) by 6 wickets
Chennai Super Kings were put in to bat with openers Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis starting strongly and quickly notching 48.
Piyush Chawla clean bowled Du Plessis who departed with 27 off 15 balls before Watson exited at the hands of Sunil Narine.
Kolkata hit back as they took three wickets in a five-over spell where they also restricted Chennai to just 30 runs.
However, MS Dhoni got Chennai back on track with an unbeaten 43 off 25 balls to leave Kolkata needing 178 to win.
Cricket statistician Umang Pabari showed how Dhoni reached a landmark during the game:
Kolkata's chase started in dramatic style with Chris Lynn hitting two sixes before departing after a review. Sky Sports Cricket showed the decision:
The hosts then had a couple of escapes as Ravindra Jadeja dropped two catches before Robin Uthappa departed for just six from eight balls.
It was therefore left to Gill to provide the heroics, and the 18-year-old did not disappoint as he netted his maiden IPL 50.
Bharath Seervi at ESPNcricinfo noted how it was the first time he's batted in the top order:
Shubman's partnership with captain Dinesh Karthik saw Kolkata to victory with the teenager finishing on an unbeaten 57 off 36 balls.
The win strengthens Kolkata's grip on a play-off place as they move into third place, while Chennai drop down to second behind Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Chennai are back in on action on Saturday when they face Royal Challengers Bangalore. Kolkata play on Sunday against defending champions Mumbai Indians.
