Pat Day Stakes 2018: Post Time, Odds, Predictions for Entire Field

David McCrackenMay 3, 2018

In the buildup to Saturday's Kentucky Derby, it's easy to forget about the undercard of the event, highlighted by the running of the Pat Day Mile Stakes.

The American Grade 3 one-mile race will be the ultimate test for the field of 14 three-year-old colts, but the prize is worth it with a $300,000 purse for the winner.

The Pat Day Mile Stakes may sound unfamiliar to some, but that's normal as the race was formerly known as the Derby Trial Stakes. The post time for this year's race takes place at 4:28 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Predictions

Sporting Chance is the clear favorite heading into this weekend's race after winning the Hopeful (GI) last summer. He will look to continue his success against a relatively inexperienced field.

Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, Sporting Chance is fresh off the Blue Grass Stakes (GII) in which he finished third before being controversially disqualified for interference toward the end of the race.

Looking to move on from that disappointing finish, Sporting Chance has the opportunity to put his name on the map against a field he shouldn't have much trouble going up against.

Standing in Sporting Chance's way of victory is the undefeated Mask and third-place Florida Derby (GI) finisher, Mississippi.

Mask has won his first two starts, including a win in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes in January, while Mississippi comes into this weekend after trailing only Audible and Hofburg in the Florida Derby, both of whom will be racing in the Run for the Roses.

Outside of those three horses, the quality of competition has a drop off, so it's likely Saturday will be a three-horse race between Sporting Chance, Mask and Mississippi. The only question is which horse will come out on top.
