Sunday marks the 2018 Pittsburgh Marathon, with 40,000 people expected to descend on the Steel City to see competitors attempt to complete the 26.2-mile run.

This will be the 10th race since the event was brought back in 2009 after a brief hiatus. Pittsburgh did not have a marathon from 2004 to 2008 because of not having a sponsor and the city's financial difficulties.

Turnout has been far better since the reintroduction of the race with Dick's Sporting Goods as a sponsor, and this year should see a competitive group of runners. The men's side has been won by a Kenyan seven times since the marathon's reintroduction, including each of the past three. Jacob Chemtai won the event last year.

Ayantu Dakebo Hailemaryam of Ethiopia has won the race the past two years on the women's side. She unseated American Clara Santucci, who wont he 2014 and 2015 events.

The marathon gets underway at 7:05 a.m. ET, but there will also be a number of other attractions at the venue. There will also be a one-mile race for kids, a pet walk and a toddler trot so families can enjoy the festivities as well.

There will also be entertainment in the neighborhoods the race goes through. A look at the 14 neighborhoods and course map is available on the marathon's official website.

"It's definitely a lifetime achievement, something that can be as important with your wedding day," Patrice Matamoros, race director of the Pittsburgh Marathon, told Ben Schmitt of TribLive. "It's really fun to think how it can change somebody's life. We see the emotions at the finish line all the time, and we still get choked up."

The race itself can serve as a qualifier for the 2019 Boston Marathon.
