Knicks HC Rumors: David Fizdale, Mike Budenholzer, David Blatt Prime Contenders

David Blatt, Mike Budenholzer and David Fizdale are reportedly viewed as the "prime contenders" to fill the New York Knicks' head coaching vacancy. 

Marc Stein of the New York Times reported the update Wednesday and noted the Knicks could make a final choice "as early as this week."

New York has cast a wide net in its search to replace Jeff Hornacek, who was fired last month after the team finished a 29-53 season.

On Monday, Marc Berman of the New York Post reported the Knicks interviewed 10 candidates with the potential to add another before reaching a decision. He noted the Los Angeles Clippers' Doc Rivers and Portland Trail Blazers' Terry Stotts remained on the radar for late interviews.

General manager Scott Perry told reporters what the front office was looking for in its new coach during a press conference last month:

"We're going to be looking for a coach who holds the players accountable and his coaching staff accountable. Not only a good basketball mind but a very skilled communicator. A guy who can connect very well with his players and is equally aligned with wanting to be a very strong defensive-minded team that won't only resonate with the candidate we want, but New Yorkers. The Knicks teams of yesteryear were tough-minded defensive teams who competed every night."

Blatt, the 2014 EuroLeague Coach of the Year, compiled an 83-40 record across a season and a half leading the Cleveland Cavaliers before getting fired in January 2016. He currently coaches Darussafaka in Turkey.

Fizdale was fired by the Memphis Grizzlies in November after a 7-12 start to the season. He led Memphis to a 43-39 mark and a playoff appearance in 2016-17, his first season in charge.

Budenholzer mutally parted ways with the Atlanta Hawks last month after five seasons. He finished his run in Atlanta with a 213-197 record and four trips to the postseason.

The Knicks' choice will inherit a roster that needs a lot of work around star forward Kristaps Porzingis.
