Spencer Gallagher Suspended Indefinitely by NASCAR for Drug Violation

Timothy RappMay 2, 2018

NASCAR has suspended driver Spencer Gallagher indefinitely for violating the sport's substance abuse policy, according to ESPN.com.

"I recently have had a positive result in a NASCAR drug screen which has violated NASCAR's substance abuse policy," Gallagher said in a statement Tuesday. "I want to assure everyone in the NASCAR community this one time error in judgement will never happen again. I am taking the steps to enroll in the Road to Recovery program supported by NASCAR."

Gallagher failed a drug test on May 1, per NASCAR.com.

"GMS fully supports NASCAR's policy on substance abuse and we do not condone this type of behavior," Mike Beam, the president of GMS Racing, added in a statement. "First and foremost, our entire organization wants to apologize to NASCAR, our sponsors, teammates and fans due to this policy violation. ... A substitute driver will be announced at a later date."

Gallagher, 28, won last weekend's NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Talladega, his first career win. That victory qualified him for for the playoffs, though NASCAR announced that he will not be granted a playoff waiver even if he is reinstated this season.

Additionally, Gallagher and GMS Racing will not be eligible to compete in this weekend's Dash 4 Cash at Dover.

In his career, Gallagher has totaled 22 top-10 finishes combined in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and Xfinity Series.

"I have not upheld the behavior that is expected of me," Gallagher added in his statement, apologizing to GMS Racing, NASCAR and its fans. "I promise you all here and know, I will do whatever it takes to make this right."
