Kentucky Derby 2018 Post Positions: Complete Listing for Every Horse
The post draw for the 2018 Kentucky Derby took place on Tuesday, and favourites Justify, Magnum Moon and Mendelssohn all came away with solid positions for Saturday's race at Churchill Downs in Louisville.
Justify will break from stall seven, while the 14th post will be home to Mendelssohn. Magnum Moon will be a little further outside in the No. 16 stall.
Here's a look at the full post positions, as well as odds, per Alicia Wincze Hughes of BloodHorse:
Justify is unbeaten in three starts, dominating the field in every one of his races this year. That included the Santa Anita Derby on April 7, when he easily finished ahead of another strong Derby contender, Bolt d'Oro, who drew the 11th post.
Here's a look at the colt in action:
What he lacks in experience, Justify makes up for in raw speed and talent. Starting from the seventh stall, he should be able to get to the rail fairly quickly, and as long as he doesn't get crowded out, he should be in a strong position.
Things could be a little more tricky for Magnum Moon, the other top contender who didn't race as a two-year-old. He'll start further toward the outside but, with Mendelssohn just two stalls behind him, will find speed in his vicinity right out of the gate.
The colt just avoided the dreaded 17th post, which hasn't produced a winner in race history, per Christina Moore of America's Best Racing.
Audible will start from the No. 5 stall, one of the top draws of recent years. Last year's winner, Always Dreaming, and 2014 champion California Chrome both broke from that post.
