Undrafted Free Agents 2018: Latest Rumors on Top Prospects Available

Steve SilvermanApr 29, 2018

Seven rounds of the NFL draft are not enough when it comes to filling out a roster in late April.

The league's 32 teams went through the three-day process of selecting talented rookies to compete for valuable roster spots from Thursday until Saturday. But after 256 names were called, beginning with the Cleveland Browns selecting quarterback Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma, NFL teams are allowed to sign undrafted college players and bring them into the fold.

These moves can turn out to be bold, but it depends on a combination of factors. A team needs to have excellent scouts who can find talent that other teams miss, the player must have a decent opportunity to show off his skills and luck has to be considered as well.

An undrafted free agent may be courted by a number of teams, and if that's the case, he must choose the right one.

Some undrafted rookie free agents who have gone on to find success in the NFL include Adam Vinatieri, Allen Hurns, Vontaze Burfict, Malcolm Butler, Chris Harris and Brent Grimes.

Teams will be hustling to get rookie free agents under contract, and Rice linebacker Emmanuel Ellerbee appears to be headed to the Atlanta Falcons.

Houston Chronicle reporter Aaron Wilson cited a source when reporting that Ellerbee is close to signing an undrafted free-agent contract with the Falcons.

Ellerbee is 6'1" and 235 pounds, and he has been timed at 4.60 in the 40-yard dash. The linebacker is a tackling machine who had 239 stops over the past two seasons with the Owls. He is not a superstar, but he can get the basics of the job done, and he is dependable. He won All-Conference USA first-team honors in back-to-back seasons.

Sean Chandler is a likely New York Giant free-agent signee.

The New York Giants made a huge splash in the draft by selecting Saquon Barkley of Penn State with the No. 2 pick overall. The former Penn State running back was thought of by many as the most talented player in the draft, and he fills a key need for the Giants since their ground game has been lacking for several years.

It appears the Giants will also bring in undrafted free agent Sean Chandler from Temple, per Josh Norris of NBC Sports.

Chandler is a 5'10", 205-pound free safety who has been timed in the 40 at 4.65. He had a career-high 74 tackles last year and two interceptions, and he finished his college career with nine interceptions.

Cornerback Levi Wallace is signing with the Buffalo Bills, according to Michael Lev of the Arizona Daily Star.

Wallace started his college career as a walk-on at Alabama, and he ended up starting for Nick Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide. Wallace is 6'0" and 179 pounds, and the Tucson, Arizona, native runs a 4.63 40. Wallace had 48 tackles, 15 passes broken up and three interceptions last season.
