Andrew Luck Trade Offers Rejected by Colts Says Jim Irsay After 2018 NFL Draft

Timothy RappApr 29, 2018

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay told reporters Saturday the team received a number of trade offers for star quarterback Andrew Luck but never entertained the notion of dealing him.

"Trust me, there are people who would have given an unprecedented amount of draft picks for him, all with a No. 1 behind them and we wouldn't even consider it," he said, per the Associated Press"He (Luck) is our guy and we're confident about that. Let's just say, I think the rest of the league is anticipating him to return and play great."

General manager Chris Ballard also added the Colts have had calls in the past six months regarding Luck.

"Look, we had some calls last year at the trade deadline," he said, per Andrew Walker of Colts.com. "And I just—c'mon man. I'm not taking those seriously."

"We're not trading Andrew Luck,” Ballard added. "I'm not putting that on my resume."

Luck, 28, missed the entire 2017 season due to a partially torn labrum in his right shoulder. He continues to rehab the shoulder and has yet to undergo a full throwing regiment with a regulation-size football.

The Colts were certainly in a position to address the quarterback position in the draft were they so inclined, originally holding the No. 3 pick before trading back to No. 6 in a deal with the New York Jets. But their belief in Luck and his recovery overruled any possibility of exploring a deep quarterback class.

"If we had any doubts, we would have obviously talked about the quarterback position (in the draft) but we really don't have any doubts," Irsay said. "Again, until he goes out and does it, it's going to be a matter of great interest and debate. It's just the way it is. But I'm very confident, having followed his rehab extremely closely, he's going to come back this season."

When healthy, Luck is one of the best quarterbacks in football. The three-time Pro Bowler threw for 4,240 yards, 31 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 15 games during the 2016 season, his third season with 4,200 or more throwing yards.

But Luck missed nine games in 2015 and all of last season, calling his durability into question. One thing that isn't in question, however, is Luck's status as the Colts franchise quarterback. Irsay and Ballard made that much crystal clear this weekend.
