Legendary Cleveland Browns running back Jim Brown did not offer his stamp of approval after the Browns selected Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft Thursday night.
When TMZ Sports asked for his thoughts, Brown responded with "No comment."
With regard to Barkley, Brown said: "I think Mr. Barkley would be a wonderful addition to the Cleveland Browns. ... I would hope that they would pick him No. 1."
Instead, Cleveland went with Mayfield, and the New York Giants landed Barkley second overall. The Browns then strengthened their secondary by adding Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward at No. 4.
Cleveland has had a glaring need at quarterback for years, and with Mayfield in place to learn behind veteran Tyrod Taylor, the Browns hope they have finally solved that problem.
Barkley has a chance to be a dominant force and perhaps even the best running back in the NFL due to his all-around skill set, but the Browns aren't devoid of talent in their backfield.
In addition to pass-catching back Duke Johnson already on the roster, the Browns signed Carlos Hyde away from the San Francisco 49ers.
If Mayfield lives up to his billing, it won't be long before the Browns have an explosive offense with Johnson/Hyde, wide receivers Jarvis Landry and Josh Gordon, and tight end David Njoku.
