On Tuesday, Brown expressed his hope to TMZ Sports that Cleveland would take Penn State Nittany Lions running back Saquon Barkley with the top selection.
With regard to Barkley, Brown said: "I think Mr. Barkley would be a wonderful addition to the Cleveland Browns. ...ย I would hope that they would pick him No. 1."
Instead, Cleveland went withย Mayfield, and the New York Giants landed Barkley second overall. The Browns then strengthened their secondary by adding Ohio State cornerbackย Denzelย Ward at No. 4.
Cleveland has had a glaring need at quarterback for years, and withย Mayfieldย in place to learn behind veteranย Tyrodย Taylor, the Browns hope they have finally solved that problem.
Barkley has a chance to be a dominant force and perhaps even the best running back in the NFL due to his all-around skill set, but the Browns aren't devoid of talent in their backfield.
In addition to pass-catching back Duke Johnson already on the roster, the Browns signed Carlos Hyde away from the San Francisco 49ers.
Ifย Mayfieldย lives up to his billing, it won't be long before the Browns have an explosive offense with Johnson/Hyde, wide receivers Jarvis Landry and Josh Gordon, and tight end Davidย Njoku.
