Unai Emery Announces Departure from PSG in Summer

Christopher SimpsonApr 27, 2018

Paris Saint-Germain manager Unai Emery announced on Friday that he will leave the club when his contract expires this summer.

Per BBC Sport, he said in a press conference: "I have told the players I am leaving."

"I thank president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the director of sport Antero Henrique, the supporters and all the players for these two seasons," he added.

ESPN FC's Jonathan Johnson supplied further comments from the coach:

The Spaniard helped PSG regain the Ligue 1 title in mid-April after they finished second to Monaco last season.

Emery has also won the Coupe de la Ligue in each of his two seasons in charge, and he will do the same with the Coupe de France provided his side beat third-tier outfit Les Herbiers in this year's final on May 8.

However, the 46-year-old has reportedly been at odds with Neymar at times this season and has failed to oversee an improvement in the UEFA Champions League.

The club had reached the quarter-final stage for four seasons running before Emery took charge, but he was unable to get them past the round of 16. Last year, Les Parisiens let slip a 4-0 lead over Barcelona, losing 6-1 at the Camp Nou, and this season they lost 5-2 on aggregate to Real Madrid.

ESPN's David Cartlidge was critical of Emery for their failure this year:

In light of their European struggles, Sport Witness' Tom Coast was not surprised by the news:

While his time at the Parc des Princes may have done little for his reputation among Europe's elite, he'll nevertheless appeal to plenty of clubs after adding a number of trophies to a CV that already included three successive UEFA Europa League titles with Sevilla.

As for PSG, they will hope Emery's replacement can succeed where he failed. Continued domestic dominance will be expected given their superiority over the rest of French football; succeeding in the Champions League will be all that matters.
