Baker Mayfield Odds-on Favorite to Be Drafted No. 1 Overall

Tim DanielsApr 26, 2018

University of Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is now the favorite to get selected with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft Thursday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

OddsShark noted Mayfield is listed at -200 to come off the board with the No. 1 selection, which is currently held by the Cleveland Browns.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported earlier Thursday there's "mounting belief" among the league's general managers and head coaches that the Browns will take the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner.

The 23-year-old Texas native completed 70.5 percent of his throws for 4,627 yards with 43 touchdowns and six interceptions across 14 games during his senior season with the Sooners. He added 311 rushing yards and five scores on the ground. He even caught a TD.

Mayfield said at the NFL Scouting Combine last month he'd embrace the opportunity to reverse Cleveland's fortunes after an extended rebuilding process.

"First things first, they'd get a winner," he told reporters. "If there's anyone who would turn that franchise around, it'd be me. They're close. They're very close. They've got the right pieces. I think they just need that one guy at quarterback."

While Mayfield's on-field production has been terrific, most of the concerns have surrounded his lack of ideal height (6'1") and his personality, which toes the line between confident and cocky.

Sam Darnold (USC), Josh Allen (Wyoming) and Josh Rosen (UCLA) are among the other quarterbacks who've competed to become the first QB off the board as part of the loaded 2018 class.
