Lewis Hamilton on Potential Move to NASCAR: 'Maybe One Day'

Gianni VerschuerenApr 25, 2018

Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has once again expressed an interest in making the jump to NASCAR, telling reporters he could move to the sport "maybe one day."

TMZ noted the 33-year-old previously spoke of his desire to race in the Daytona 500 in 2015, and he hasn't changed his mind since.

The four-time world champion already has some experience driving a stock car, as he and NASCAR legend Tony Stewart swapped seats in 2011:

Hamilton has been with Mercedes since 2013, and the Silver Arrows have dominated F1 the last few years. His current contract will run out at the end of the 2018 season, however, and he has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal, per James Gray of the Daily Express

There has been some speculation he could retire from the sport, and last year he told GloboEsporte (h/t the Express' James Benson) he might not race in F1 much longer. The 2018 campaign has not been a success for Hamilton and Mercedes so far, as the Silver Arrows are without a win after three races.

While F1 is widely regarded as the pinnacle of racing, plenty of high-profile drivers have tried their hand at different events over the years.

Just last year, McLaren's Fernando Alonso took time off to race in the Indy 500:

Alonso did so at a time when McLaren were struggling for pace and reliability, however, whereas Mercedes are still the favourites for the constructor's championship and Hamilton is battling it out for a fifth title.

He's expected to sign another deal with Mercedes at some point in 2018 and could retire or make the move to NASCAR when that deal runs out.
