Saquon Barkley, Quenton Nelson Top Mike Mayock's 2018 NFL Draft Top-100 Rankings
Quarterback prospects naturally draw plenty of attention leading up to the NFL draft, but Mike Mayock of NFL.com gave some love to the other positions when he revealed his top 100 players in the 2018 draft on Tuesday.
USC's Sam Darnold was the first quarterback to appear on the list, and he checked in as the seventh-best prospect. Penn State running back Saquon Barkley was Mayock's best player, while Notre Dame offensive guard Quenton Nelson and North Carolina State defensive end Bradley Chubb rounded out the top three.
Here is a look at his top 10:
1. Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State
2. Quenton Nelson, OG, Notre Dame
3. Bradley Chubb, DE, N.C. State
4. Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia
5. Minkah Fitzpatrick, S, Alabama
6. Derwin James, S, Florida State
7. Sam Darnold, QB, USC
8. Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame
9. Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming
10. Vita Vea, DT, Washington
Among the other notable players on Mayock's list were Virginia Tech linebacker Tremaine Edmunds at No. 11, Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward at No. 15 and Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley at No. 27. There were three consecutive quarterbacks, with UCLA's Josh Rosen, Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield and Louisville's Lamar Jackson ranked Nos. 21-23, respectively.
That the quarterbacks were behind a number of other prospects is notable, considering four of them figure to go early in Thursday's draft if the latest mock from Bleacher Report's Matt Miller is any indication.
Miller has Darnold as the first overall selection, with Allen (No. 3), Mayfield (No. 5) and Rosen (No. 6) not far behind.
However, it is not a stretch to call Barkley the best overall player in this draft after he tallied 1,271 yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground and 632 yards and three touchdowns through the air in his final collegiate season. He also scored on two of 15 kickoff returns and can impact the game in a number of ways as a three-down back and potential building block for years to come.
However, being the best player doesn't guarantee being the first selection, especially with a Cleveland Browns team on the clock that is starving for a franchise quarterback to right the ship. The Browns last made the playoffs in the 2002 season and have been searching for their next cornerstone at signal-caller for years.
