Giannis Antetokounmpo on Game-Winning Tip: 'I Get Confidence from My Teammates'

Tyler ConwayApr 22, 2018

Giannis Antetokounmpo put the Milwaukee Bucks on his back Sunday, tipping a missed Malcolm Brogdon shot with 5.1 seconds remaining for the go-ahead bucket in his team's 104-102 first-round win over the Boston Celtics.

Despite not having the ball in his hands in the final seconds, Antetokounmpo said he trusts his teammates following the Bucks' Game 4 victory.

"It comes back to trust. I get confidence from my teammates," Antetokounmpo told reporters regarding what it meant for him to come through in the clutch. "My teammates trust me to make those plays. I've been making those plays all year long. ... I think one of the most important things we can carry on from this game and move forward is that we stay disciplined and trust one another down the stretch."

Antetokounmpo had 27 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the contest, which helped the Bucks even the best-of-seven series at 2-2. The soon-to-be All-NBA selection is averaging 27.8 points, 8.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists for the series while shooting a wildly efficient 62.0 percent from the floor.

"It's a heck of a play, a hustle play," Bucks interim head coach Joe Prunty told reporters. "A lot of times on defense you'll talk about 50-50 balls. That's one there. ... This is no secret: [Antetokounmpo] works extremely hard and has a tremendous will to win."

Had Antetokounmpo not been there for the tip-in, Prunty likely would have taken the brunt of the blame for not getting the ball in his best player's hands with the game on the line. Instead, Antetokounmpo's sheer brilliance and basketball IQ allowed him to be in the right place at the right time to make the game-winner regardless of how the play started.
