PSG Transfer News: Thiago Silva Talks Exit Plans Amid Latest Rumours

Rory MarsdenApr 20, 2018

Thiago Silva has hinted he will leave Paris Saint-Germain when his contract expires in 2020.

The PSG captain has taken heavy criticism this season, especially after the French giants failed again to go deep in the UEFA Champions League, and Silva revealed it has taken its toll, per Le Foot Paris (via AS):

"It is impossible not to hear some of the criticism. However, no newspaper, nor journalist, is going to tell me who I am. I know who I am. Because of this, I continue as I always have done.

"I respect all opinions, but when you are attacked personally, it starts to get hard. I am especially sad when it impacts my family and my loved ones. However, when you wear the PSG shirt, you always have a responsibility.

"I must continue to work hard to help my team-mates. Competition always exists in football. All things said, I am 33. I have two years left on my contract and after that, I will hand over to somebody else."

Silva joined PSG from AC Milan for £36 million in 2012. He has been a stalwart of the side as the Parisians have attempted to establish themselves as a football superpower.

As a result, the Brazil international has also become a target for criticism.

He has five Ligue 1 titles under his belt but has also been involved in each of PSG's six successive disappointments in the Champions League, as they have never managed to get beyond the quarter-finals.

Silva came under fire for his lack of leadership after their second consecutive last-16 exit in March, with Sport's Javier Giraldo one of those to criticise the defender.

It has even been suggested that, in an attempt to conquer Europe, PSG will undergo a major overhaul this summer and that Silva could be one of the first out the door, per RMC (via French football writer Jonathan Johnson):

It seems as though all is not well between Silva and PSG, and it would not be a surprise were he soon to depart the club, as he is clearly feeling the pressure.
