Barcelona Transfer News: Clement Lenglet Price Revealed, Conflicting Rumours

Tom SunderlandApr 20, 2018

Barcelona have reportedly discovered how much it would cost to sign Sevilla centre-back Clement Lenglet this summer despite conflicting rumours over the Blaugrana's intention to make a move.

Mundo Deportivo and Sport disclosed Lenglet has a €35 million (£30.7 million) buyout clause (h/t Sport Witness).

There was some disagreement over whether Barca will move for the player, though. While Mundo Deportivo said he would only be pursued as a potential alternative to contract holdout Samuel Umtiti, Sport wrote the club will attempt to sign him regardless.

Lenglet, 22, was part of the Sevilla team that bowed out to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, and the BBC's John Bennett praised his progress while acknowledging the youngster has room to grow:

Barcelona added a new central defender to their ranks when they brought Colombia international Yerry Mina to the club from Palmeiras in January.

But while Mina has looked awkward in his first few Barcelona showings, Lenglet impressed almost immediately after moving to Spain from Nancy in 2017.

The Sevilla defender is one of La Liga's more consistent forces in recent times, and Albert Roge of Sport added talks between Barca and his representatives have already taken place.

Football writer Nick Dorrington lauded the Frenchman's quality after he played a hand in Manchester United's exit from the Champions League at Sevilla's hands in the round of 16:

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barca aren't willing to match the lucrative offer Manchester United are said to have presented Umtiti, who has a €60 million (£52.6 million) buyout clause (h/t Sport Witness). They're said to be more willing to move for Lenglet if Umtiti doesn't pen an extension.

Sevilla manager Vincenzo Montella recently did his bit to sell Lenglet as a player of Barca quality, telling reporters: "He is a champion with a strong mentality, and in the future he can definitely play for Barcelona."

Barcelona will also have one eye on the condition of Gerard Pique, 31, who will eventually need replacing.

Umititi's situation has seemingly created some urgency to reinforce the club's defensive ranks. And speculation Lenglet could move to the Camp Nou as either his compatriot's successor or team-mate is intensifying.
