Gayle came out swinging early and never looked back, powering Kings XI with an unbeaten 104. He hit no fewer than 11 sixes and faced 63 balls in total during his phenomenal knock.

Punjab didn't need much from the rest of the lineup with the 38-year-old firing like that. Karun Nair added 31 from 21 and Aaron Finch bagged a quick 14 not out from just six balls at the end of the innings, securing a healthy score of 193/3.

That score was always likely to hold, especially after Shikhar Dhawan retired with an injury. The star batsman took a delivery to the elbow and walked off the pitch without scoring a run:

Kane Williamson contributed a half-century (54 from 41) and Manish Pandey repeated that feat (unbeaten 57), but it was not enough to bring the chase to a successful end.

While the loss will sting for Sunrisers, the injury to Dhawan could be far worse in the long run. The 32-year-old is one of the most consistent batsmen in the IPL, and Hyderabad need his great work to tie together their order.
