2018 NFL Draft Rumors: Jets Expected to Select Baker Mayfield over Josh Rosen

Mike ChiariApr 19, 2018

The New York Jets are reportedly expected to take Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield over UCLA signal-caller Josh Rosen with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft if both are on the board.

According to Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.com, a source said Mayfield to the Jets is a "done deal."

Pauline wrote that while Rosen is still "in consideration" for the Jets, those representing the top signal-callers in the draft think New York is smitten with Mayfield.

The Jets' decision will likely be influenced by what happens above them in the draft.

The Cleveland Browns figure to target a quarterback at No. 1 overall, and the New York Giants could potentially take Eli Manning's successor at No. 2.

Along with Mayfield and Rosen, USC's Sam Darnold and Wyoming's Josh Allen are expected to be selected near the top of the draft.

The Jets also have to be cognizant of quarterback-needy teams such as the Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills or Arizona Cardinals possibly trading ahead of them.

New York has a bevy of quarterbacks on its roster in Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, but none of them stand out as long-term answers.

Mayfield is coming off a dominant senior season at Oklahoma that culminated in a Heisman Trophy win. He completed 70.5 percent of his passes for 4,627 yards, 43 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Rosen completed 62.6 percent of his attempts for 3,756 yards, 26 touchdowns and 10 picks.

While the numbers favor Mayfield, he is listed on the small side for a quarterback at 6'1" and 215 pounds. Conversely, Rosen has prototypical size at 6'4" and 226 pounds.

In his latest NFL mock draft, Bleacher Report's Matt Miller predicted the Jets will take Allen third overall. He projected Mayfield heading to the Broncos at No. 5 and Rosen landing with the Bills at No. 6 after a trade up with the Indianapolis Colts.
