Barcelona Transfer News: Andre Gomes Reportedly to Leave at End of Season

Rory MarsdenApr 19, 2018

Andre Gomes will reportedly leave Barcelona at the end of the season after a disappointing two-year spell at the club.

According to Sport, his departure was decided "weeks ago" and both parties are now just waiting for this Saturday's Copa del Rey final and the end of the season to make the announcement.

The report added both Gomes, 24, and Barca are confident an acceptable offer will arrive once the 2017-18 campaign is over.

The Blaugrana paid €35 million to sign Gomes from Valencia in 2016, but he has since failed to establish himself in the first team.

Of his 46 La Liga appearances for Barcelona, half have come from the bench, and he has recently felt the ire of the Camp Nou faithful after some poor performances, per Sport.

Gomes was granted a rare start in the experimental side that faced Celta Vigo in La Liga on Tuesday, and he was substituted after an hour.

Things have not worked out for the Portugal international at Barca, but he has more than enough talent to thrive elsewhere, per Squawka's Muhammad Butt and Sid Lowe of the Guardian:

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Gomes as a replacement for Mousa Dembele, per the Mirror's Aaron Flanagan and Darren Lewis.

A move to work under Mauricio Pochettino could prove beneficial for the central midfielder.

Spurs should be back in the UEFA Champions League again next season and could be Premier League title contenders, but they are a significantly smaller club than Barca and the pressure on Gomes would be reduced in north London.

He would also have a better chance of earning more regular first-team action, while he should be attracted by the prospect of working to progress the exciting side Pochettino is building at Spurs.
