Liverpool Transfer News: Ruben Neves Rumours Emerge Ahead of Summer

Gianni VerschuerenApr 18, 2018

Liverpool are reportedly working on bringing Ruben Neves into the fold during the summer, amid rumours Wolverhampton have already found a replacement for the midfielder in Anderson Talisca.

According to Portuguese journalist Marcus Alves (via Jack Otway of the Express), the Reds are working on the Neves deal and could sign the 21-year-old as a replacement for Emre Can.

Per bet365, he's been on the radar of the Reds for some time now:

Talisca is on loan with Besiktas but still on the books at Benfica. The Brazilian isn't an exact replacement, as he's mainly played as an attacking midfielder so far in his career.

Neves' move to Wolves last summer was one of the biggest shocks of the transfer window, with Bleacher Report's Dean Jones describing it as the "strangest transfer of the year."

The youngster was regarded as one of the top talents in Portuguese football and a future star for Porto, having captained the team at a young age. He took a step back during the 2016-17 season but was still a wanted man, only to shock everyone by following his manager to the Championship.

Wolves have enjoyed a great season under Nuno Espirito Santo, and Neves has been at the centre of it all, running the show from central midfield.

His great talent has stood out at the Championship level, per Coral:

Neves has made 39 starts in the competition, orchestrating play from midfield and making a ton of defensive contributions. His passing range and athleticism have been perfect fits for Wolves, and he has also added six goals.

Some of those goals have been spectacular, including this effort against Derby County, via the club's official YouTube channel:

Wolverhampton will be in the Premier League next year, and Neves is expected to stick around this summer, as he continues his development under Nuno. It might not be easy to turn down a move to a top club, however, especially after he made the decision to do so a year ago.

If Can does not sign a new deal with the Reds and instead walks as a free agent, a slot will open in midfield. It could be the perfect situation for Neves, who will want regular minutes after spending far too much time on Porto's bench last season.
