2018 NFL Draft Rumors: Patriots Are Team 'Most Interested' in Lamar Jackson

Rob GoldbergApr 11, 2018

Lamar Jackson continues to rise up NFL draft boards, and the New England Patriots could end up pulling the trigger during the April 26-28 event.

According to Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman, the Patriots are the "most interested" in the former Louisville quarterback, although several teams "have been impressed with his intelligence and football acumen."

Jackson has sometimes been an afterthought in the draft's quarterback conversation, which Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield and Josh Allen headline. However, he remains a legitimate option for teams looking for QB help.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reported Monday multiple scouts believe he will be taken in the first round.

The 2016 Heisman Trophy winner is known for his running ability, finishing his career with 4,132 rushing yards and 50 touchdowns. However, he has also done damage as a passer with 9,043 career passing yards and 69 scores.

His 57.0 percent completion rate has been in question, but it is higher than Allen's 56.2 percent.

While Jackson's addition could make sense for several teams, his going to the Patriots would raise eyebrows. Even with two first-round picks—Nos. 23 and 31—the team could use draft selections who'd help immediately. With Tom Brady set to turn 41 years old before next season, his long-term future is uncertain.

On the other hand, Jackson could represent a legitimate backup and heir apparent, which was lost after the Patriots traded both Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett last season.

In either case, it doesn't appear as though teams will be able to wait long to select the dynamic quarterback.
