Manchester United Transfer News: Swansea's Alfie Mawson Scouted in Fresh Rumours

Manchester United have reportedly scouted Swansea City star Alfie Mawson.

The Sun's Dave Fraser reported United sent one of their top scouts to assess Mawson in Swansea's 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League, and manager Jose Mourinho—who is eager to improve his options at the back this summer—received "rave reviews" about the 24-year-old.

Tottenham Hotspur are also said to be interested in him and were informed he is valued at more than £40 million.

The likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have been far from convincing of late, while Victor Lindelof—who arrived at Old Trafford last summer from Benfica for £31 million—has struggled to replicate the performances that earned him his move.

Football writer Liam Canning noted United's need to recruit at the back:

It's not surprising Mawson has caught the attention of the Premier League's elite after his strong form this season was rewarded with his first England call-up last month.

The 24-year-old responded to his inclusion in the squad with humility, per BBC Sport's Ian Dennis:

Such an attitude is impressive, and his performances on the pitch have been equally so.

Physically, Mawson is more than capable of coping with the rigours of Premier League football. He's strong in the air and good on the ball; he's a composed presence at the back and can reliably dribble or pass the ball out from defence.

According to Squawka, the centre-back has won 103 aerial duels in the Premier League this season and made a staggering 199 clearances, as well as 29 blocks and 26 interceptions.

He's only committed 11 fouls in 32 matches, and he has also successfully completed 14 of the 16 take-ons he has attempted.

Mawson's rise from playing League Two football in early 2015 to being part of a Three Lions squad is remarkable, and it's possible he can still take his game further.

He would be something of a gamble given his price tag, though, and United can ill afford for another expensive player struggle to make the step up.
